Goldeyes Take Series from Saltdogs

July 18, 2012 - American Association (AA)
Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release

A great start by lefty Todd Privett and some timely hitting all came together to give the Winnipeg Goldeyes a series win in Nebraska on Wednesday night.

After losing a 2-1 heartbreaker on Tuesday night, the Goldeyes went back into Haymarket Park in Lincoln and blasted the Lincoln Saltdogs 10-4 to win the final game of this three-game series and take the series two-games-to-one.

With the win, the Goldeyes improved to 34-23 - 17-12 on the road -- and kept pace with first-place Fargo in the race for the top spot in the American Association's North Division.

The Goldeyes opened the scoring in the second inning as Luis Alen singled and was later doubled home by Kyle Day. In the third, Ridge Carpenter singled and was later driven home on a single by Yurendell de Caster.

In the fourth, the Goldeyes scored a pair with two out. Actually, the Goldeyes had two out when Jose Duran struck out. But Duran advanced to first on a third-strike wild pitch and then scored on a double by Amos Ramon. Ramon then stole third and scored on a wild pitch as Winnipeg took a 4-0 lead.

Then, in the eighth, the Goldeyes buried the home side with a six-run outburst.

Price Kendall singled, Chris Roberson singled, de Caster walked and Alen walked to give the Goldeyes a 5-0 lead. Then Josh Mazzola extended his hitting streak to 15 straight games with a double that scored two-runs. That made it 7-0 and it set up Kyle Day who ripped a three-run home run inside the foul pole to make it a rout.

Relievers Billy Spottiswood and Dexter Carter were tagged for four runs in the ninth, but Privett and Brian Beuning combined for eight shutout innings.

The Goldeyes had 13 hits on the night. Day finished two-for-four with a run scored and four RBI while Kendall went three-for-five with a run scored and Roberson went two-for-four with a walk and a run scored.

Privett (4-3, 3.67 ERA) got the win for the Goldeyes, who played another game without their leader, the injured Jon Weber. Tommy Palica (1-5, 7.25 ERA) suffered the loss.

After the game, the Goldeyes hopped on the bus and headed for Sioux Falls. The Fish and Sioux Falls Fighting Pheasants will open a four-game weekend series. Game time in Sioux Falls on Thursday is 7:05 p.m. and the game can be heard live on TSN 1290 with Paul Edmonds calling the play-by-play.

The Goldeyes return home next Tuesday, July 24, when the Quebec Les Capitales visit Shaw Park.
