
Goldeyes Split Double Header with Cougars

WINNIPEG, MB - The Winnipeg Goldeyes (44-39) split a double header with the Kane County Cougars at Shaw Park on Saturday night, dropping the opener 3-0 and winning the nightcap 10-1.
In game one, Cougars' starting pitcher Jack Fox (3-5) pitched a complete game, three-hit shutout. Fox walked one, struck out five, and retired the final 13 batters to face him.
Kane County (39-46) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a two-out, RBI single from Mitch Reeves. Nick Anderson hit a solo home run with one out in the top of the third, while Nick Conti's RBI single in the top of the fourth made it 3-0.
Goldeyes' starter Jorge Gonzalez (4-5) took the loss, allowing three earned runs on seven hits in four innings. Gonzalez walked one and struck out five.
Austin Henrich, Tyler Smith, and Joseph Camacho each pitched a scoreless inning in relief of Gonzalez.
In game two, the Cougars took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second on a two-out, RBI double from Josh Allen.
The Goldeyes scored 10 unanswered runs, beginning with an RBI single from Austin Rei in the bottom of the third that tied the game. Rei drove home Logan Hill who led off the inning with a double down the left field line.
Kyle Martin walked leading off the bottom of the fourth. Two batters later, Kevin Lachance walked, and the Goldeyes took the lead when Logan Hill singled to centre driving home Martin.
Winnipeg scored six times in the bottom of the fifth. Tyler Hill and Wes Darvill opened the inning with walks. Max Murphy singled off the body of reliever Ryley Widell to plate Hill. With runners on the corners, Martin lifted a sacrifice fly to left that scored Darvill. After Raul Navarro walked, Lachance singled through the left side to score Murphy. Logan Hill walked to load the bases, and two batters later, Rei worked a walk that forced home Navarro. Tyler Hill capped the inning with a two-run double down the left field line.
The Goldeyes tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the sixth on a Navarro groundout and a two-out, RBI single from Deon Stafford.
Zac Ryan (1-0) was credited with the win in relief, striking out two in a scoreless top of the sixth.
Landen Bourassa started for the Goldeyes and took a no-decision, allowing one earned run on nine hits in four and two-thirds innings. Bourassa walked none and struck out one.
Connor Berry started for the Cougars and also took a no-decision, allowing one earned run on one hit in two-plus innings. Berry walked none and struck out one.
Widell (0-1) took the loss in relief for the Cougars.
With its completion, Saturday officially marks the Goldeyes' ninth double header of the season, which ties a franchise record set in 2009.
The Goldeyes and Cougars complete their four-game series Sunday afternoon with a double header. First pitch in game one is scheduled for 11:05 a.m.
