WINNIPEG, MB - The Winnipeg Goldeyes (45-39) defeated the Kane County Cougars 4-2 in the opener of a doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Shaw Park. Game two was cancelled due to rain. With no further meetings remaining between the two clubs this season, the game will not be rescheduled.
Kane County (39-47) opened the scoring in the top of the third inning when Nick Anderson doubled into the left field corner bringing home Nick Conti.
The Goldeyes took the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning when Deon Stafford hit a bases-clearing triple into the gap in left-centre field. Kyle Martin, Kevin Lachance, and Logan Hill crossed the plate, giving Winnipeg a 3-1 advantage.
The Cougars closed to within one run of the Goldeyes in the top of the sixth inning when Mitch Reeves came in to score on an infield single by Nick Lovullo.
Winnipeg re-established a two-run lead in the bottom of the inning when Austin Rei tripled down the left field line to drive in Stafford and make the score 4-2.
Donnie Hart converted a five-out save - his seventh of the season - to secure the victory. Travis Seabrooke (5-0) was credited with the win, retiring the only batter he faced in the top of the fifth in relief of starter Jose Vasquez. Vasquez did not allow an earned run and gave up just three hits in four and two-thirds innings. He struck out six batters
Winnipegger Marc-Andre Habeck (0-1) was charged with the loss, giving up four runs on eight hits in five and two-thirds innings of work.
