Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release

They went blow-for-blow all game, but the Winnipeg Goldeyes outlasted the Kansas City T-Bones Friday night.

The Goldeyes scored in five consecutive innings and hung on late to dispose of the T-Bones 9-8 in Kansas before 5,018 fans at CommunityAmerica Ballpark.

The win improves Winnipeg's record to 25-34 and moves the Goldeyes back to within nine games of the T-Bones (32-23) in the American Association wild card race. The victory also puts a halt to Winnipeg's four-game losing streak.

The game was scoreless for the first two innings, but the two sides then combined to score in 17 runs in seven innings.

Winnipeg scored two runs in four straight innings, beginning in the top of the third when Casio Grider and Chris Robinson had RBI hits.

After Kansas City scored a run in the bottom of the third, Josh Mazzola hit a two-run home run in the top of the fourth to give Winnipeg a 4-1 lead. The home run leaves Mazzola one home run shy of Terry Lee's franchise record of 65 home runs.

Following another T-Bones run, Casey Haerther and Reggie Abercrombie drove in runs in the top of the fifth.

An inning later, the Goldeyes took advantage of some Kansas City miscues as Grider scored on a passed ball and Adam Heisler scored on a wild pitch.

Brad Boyer's RBI double in the top of the seventh was surrounded by T-Bones singles in the bottom of the sixth, seventh and eighth. Even with the three-peg picket fence the T-Bones built, the Goldeyes had a 9-5 lead.

Kansas City added three runs in the bottom of the ninth off Goldeyes closer Jailen Peguero, but left the tying run on third base.

Robinson, Haerther and Mazzola had two hits each to pace the Goldeyes, while Mazzola's two-run dinger gave him the only multi-RBI game for the visitors.

Goldeyes starter Matt Jackson gave up four runs and 10 hits in 6 1/3 innings of work to get the win, while Kansas City starter Michael Nannini suffered the loss after allowing six runs in four innings.

Rett Varner and Brendan Lafferty also worked out of the bullpen for the Goldeyes. Lafferty was touched for a run, but it was unearned.

The third game of the four-game series goes Saturday night in Kansas City. Tony Smith (3-2, 3.61) will head to the hill for the Goldeyes against Blake Holovach (5-1, 3.17) for the T-Bones.

Coverage on Jewel 100.5 FM begins with Around the Association at 6:00 p.m. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
