Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release

Gary, Ind. - After Adam Taylor singled in the tying run with two outs in the ninth inning, the Sioux City Explorers busted the game open in extras, driving in five runs on five hits, handing the Gary SouthShore RailCats its third straight loss, 9-5 Thursday at the U.S. Steel Yard.

The 'Cats (27-31) drove in three runs on three bases loaded walks in the first inning off Sioux City starter Ryan Zimmerman, but the X's ace settled down after that, retiring the next 12 batters in a row to finish with only one earned run allowed on two hits and four walks in 6.2 innings pitched.

Gary SouthShore let the lead slip away in the seventh as J.D. Pulfer committed his second run-costing error of the game and the Explorers (41-17) turned the game around to take a 4-3 lead.

That's where the game stayed until Taylor's game-tying hit in the ninth.

Then the wheels fell off for the reliever Andy Loomis and the RailCats as Sioux City's league-leading offense touched them up for five in the 10th.

'Cats starter Fernando Gonzalez went four innings and left with a 3-2 lead.

Relief pitcher/first baseman Michael Schroeder pitched well out of the 'pen, giving up only one hit in two innings while striking out three. Schroder, a Crown Point, Ind., native, hasn't allowed a run in six innings pitched this season.

The RailCats continue their race to get back into wild card contention Friday against Sioux City. Righty Eric Wordekemper (3-2) goes for the X's while the 'Cats send southpaw Andy Roberts (1-5) to the bump for the 7:10 first pitch.
