Goldeyes Finish off ThunderHeads
August 1, 2015 - American Association (AA)
Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
The Winnipeg Goldeyes took care of their own business Friday night and also received a boost from the out-of-town scoreboard.
Josh Mazzola hit a two-run home run and Kyle Anderson was brilliant on the mound as the Goldeyes completed the sweep of the Amarillo ThunderHeads with a 4-1 win before 6,011 fans at Shaw Park.
The Goldeyes improved to 30-34 on the season with the victory and extended their season-high winning streak to six games. Thanks to the Kansas City T-Bones losing on the road against the Sioux Falls Canaries, the Goldeyes are within six games of Kansas City in the American Association wild card race. The Goldeyes have made up four games in the race during the last week.
The sweep was also record-breaking for the Goldeyes. Winnipeg allowed just two runs in the three-game series, which ties a franchise record overall and sets a franchise record in a home series.
As had been the case for most of the series, the Goldeyes grabbed an early lead Friday night with a run in the second inning when Adam Heisler singled in Luis Alen.
Josh Mazzola added to the Goldeyes lead with a two-run home run in the bottom of the third inning - his league-leading 17th homer of the season.
Winnipeg extended the lead in the bottom of the sixth as Luis Alen singled, went to third on a Ryan Babineau bloop single and scored on a Casio Grider base hit.
Amarillo's Dexter Kjerstad hit a solo home run in the top of the ninth off Rett Varner, but that was as far as the comeback bid would get.
Aside from Mazzola's blast, Winnipeg's offence was led by two-hit nights from Heisler, Alen, Babineau and Grider.
Goldeyes starter Kyle Anderson had his best start of the season, pitching six scoreless innings for his second quality start of the season. He took the win, while Matt Larkins suffered the loss for Amarillo.
The Goldeyes welcome the T-Bones to Shaw Park Saturday night for the first of three games in a crucial series when it comes to the wild card race. Coby Cowgill (2-3, 5.06) will take the ball for Winnipeg.
Tickets for all Goldeyes home games are available through Ticketmaster by clicking on Ticketmaster.ca, calling 1-855-GOLDEYE or visiting any Ticketmaster location, including the Shaw Park box office.
