
Blasters Trap Lemurs for Series Victory

Joplin, MO-The Blasters finished the month of July with a series-clinching 8-3 victory over Laredo Friday night at Joe Becker Stadium.
In 13 games with the Lemurs this season, Joplin (35-27) finished with a 4-9 record. The Blasters won the rubber match to make it two straight over Laredo (35-30) and remain two-and-a-half games behind first-place Wichita in the South Division. Joplin also pulled into a tie for the American Association wild-card lead with Kansas City.
After a scoreless first, the Blasters scored the game's first run in the second. Omar Luna led off the inning with a double to deep right-center. Jake Taylor followed with a single to left. Carlos Ramirez walked to load the bases. Mitch Glasser then grounded into a 6-4-3 double play that brought home Luna from third. Joplin added a single mark in the third with a one-out solo home run from Maikol Gonzalez to deep left. It was Gonzalez's sixth dinger of the season.
The Blasters plated two more runs in the fourth. Mitch Glasser led off the inning with a walk. Jesus Solorzano then doubled into the left field corner. Gabe Suarez made it 3-0 with a sacrifice fly to center that scored Glasser from third. Maikol Gonzalez drove in his second run of the night with a line drive single to left center that brought in Solorzano. A lead-off home run to deep left in the sixth by Solorzano made it 5-0 Joplin. It was Solorzano's sixth big fly of the season.
Laredo scratched three runs across in the seventh to cut the lead to two. Joplin added three insurance tallies in the eighth for the five-run margin. On the mound, Alberto Castillo posted his first win for the Blasters. Castillo (1-0) worked six-and-two-thirds and gave up two earned runs on five hits with five strikeouts and one walk. Luis Pollorena suffered the loss for the Lemurs. Pollorena (5-2) yielded four earned runs on six hits (one HR) with three strikeouts and one walk. Winston Abreu posted his second save of the series and 11th of the season for Joplin. Abreu pitched one-and-a-third with one hit and one strikeout.
Joplin outhit Laredo 10-to-8. Maikol Gonzalez went 4-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs. Jesus Solorzano finished 3-for-4 with one RBI and three runs. Omar Luna also collected two hits with one RBI and a run. Ty Morrison and Ryan Ortiz both had two hits for Laredo.
Joplin's seven-game home stand continues Saturday through Tuesday with a four-game series against Gary SouthShore. First pitch Saturday night is at 7:05.
