Wichita Wingnuts News Release
OTTAWA, ONTARIO - The Wichita Wingnuts have gone through a heavy dose of turnover to their roster both prior to and during their current road trip. On Saturday night in Ottawa, it was a pair of new additions to the ball club that came up big when needed to win the opening game of a series against the Ottawa Champions 4-2.
On the mound for the Wingnuts was newly signed right-hander Eddie Medina (1-0). The former St. John's University hurler was brilliant in his debut with the team. He allowed just one unearned run in 5.2 solid innings on the hill. The Champions (27-33) scored that run in the fifth inning to take the lead momentarily. Chris Winder bunted for a base hit to start the inning and was on first when Daniel Bick also laid down a bunt. Medina threw wildly to first after fielding the second bunt and the ball sailed down the line. Winder scored and Bick moved to second on the play. Medina would strand him at third. The 25-year old struck out three and walked one.
The Wingnuts could not get to Champions' starter Laetten Galbraith (1-4) in the early going despite having chances from the start. They left runners stranded in each of the first four innings, including a bases loaded opportunity in the third. Wichita (40-26) finally cashed in during the top of the sixth. The inning began with a single from John Nester and continued when Joash Brodin worked a one out walk. Galbraith bounced back to strikeout Tyler Heil for the second out. That set the stage for the next recent addition to show up in a big way.
Jerry Gonzalez, who was hitless in his first eight at-bats with the team, singled up the middle to drive in his first run and tie the score. Leo Vargas followed with an RBI single of his own to push the Nuts in front 2-1. The shortstop was 2-3 with a walk and a run scored. Before the inning was complete, Jayce Ray looped a two-RBI single into right that cleared the bases and increased the advantage to three.
Daniel Bennett worked 1.1 scoreless innings as the first man out of the pen. He recorded a pair of strikeouts. Iden Nazario cruised through the eighth inning without any problems to set up a save opportunity for Dakota Watts. The closer recorded his 11th save of the season despite allowing his first run since joining the Wingnuts.
Game two of the series will be played on Sunday afternoon at 1:35 p.m. Eastern time. For information on season tickets, group outings, and party packages, call the Wingnuts' main office at (316) 264-NUTS, or visit the Wingnuts' official website at www.wichitawingnuts.com.
