Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release

WINNIPEG, MB - The Winnipeg Goldeyes (12-5) beat the Lincoln Saltdogs 5-2 at Shaw Park on Sunday afternoon.

The Goldeyes finish their first homestand of the season 5-2 and have now won 10 of their last 13 games.

"Great baseball game, well pitched," said Goldeyes' manager Rick Forney. "Kevin was fantastic today. He battled and strung together nine or 10 consecutive outs. He's matured a ton as a pitcher. We always liked him a ton when we saw him in Lincoln. If you ask teams last year who they wanted to skip in the rotation, it's Kevin. He's got good stuff, his fastball has life, the velocity and arm speed is good, and he has a real weapon in that slider."

Trailing 2-1, Reggie Abercrombie led off the bottom of the sixth with a triple down the right field line. Shawn Pleffner followed with a sacrifice fly to centre that scored Abercrombie with the tying run. Two batters later, Wes Darvill looped a two-out single to centre. After Mason Katz and Casio Grider drew consecutive walks to load the bases, David Rohm worked Lincoln reliever Zac Person for a nine-pitch walk that forced home the go-ahead run. Winnipeg took a 5-2 lead when Person made an errant throw to first on a Josh Romanski comebacker that allowed both Katz and Grider to score.

Goldeyes' starter Kevin McGovern (3-0) made the lead stand with a scoreless top of the seventh. Victor Capellan struck out the side in order in the top of the eighth, while Ryan Chaffee worked a perfect ninth to earn his seventh save.

"You have to learn to be good in your white uniforms and your gray uniforms," Forney said regarding the Goldeyes' 5-2 homestand. "The last few years we've been really good on the road, but you have to be good at home."

Lincoln took a quick 1-0 lead when Randolph Oduber led off the game with a solo home run down the right field line.

In the bottom of the third, Darvill reached on a leadoff, infield single. After Katz walked, Grider lifted a deep flyball to centre field that moved Darvil to third and Katz to second. The Saltdogs intentionally walked Rohm to load the bases, and Winnipeg scored the tying run on a Romanski groundball to first.

Lincoln re-gained the lead in the fifth when Trever Adams hit a leadoff triple to centre field and scored on Brent Dean's line drive single to centre.

McGovern earned the win, allowing two earned runs on four hits over seven innings. McGovern walked two and struck out eight.

"I felt great today," said McGovern. "Just thought about going as deep as I could into the game. We have an amazing ball club here. Our starters are going to go deep in the game. I just want to do what Mikey did the night before. The fans are great (at Shaw Park). I love the mound. It's one of those things that you're just comfortable when you touch the rubber. Fans are as into the game as much as I want to be."

Person took the loss, allowing four runs, two earned, in two-thirds of an inning.

Bennett Parry started for Lincoln and took a no-decision, allowing one earned run on two hits in five innings. Parry walked four and struck out three.

Katz drew three walks and also tripled in the bottom of the eighth inning. Rohm's hitting streak came to an end at 12 games. In the top of the ninth, Rohm made a sprinting catch with his arm fully extended to rob Christian Ibarra in support of Chaffee.

The Goldeyes open a three-game series against the Sioux City Explorers on Tuesday night. First pitch from Lewis and Clark Park is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Zach Nuding (1-1, 8.10) faces left-hander Cody Forsythe (0-1, 3.60). All the action can be heard locally on 93.7 FM CJNU and worldwide at www.cjnu.ca
