Wichita Wingnuts News Release

FARGO, N.D. - Charlie Valerio lined a walk-off double in the bottom of the 10th inning, and the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks avoided a sweep with a 7-6 victory over the Wichita Wingnuts on Sunday afternoon at Newman Outdoor Field.

Valerio's hit came on the heels of a RedHawks rally in the bottom of the ninth that saw Fargo-Moorhead (12-5) tie the game at 6-6 on Kes Carter's two-run double off Wingnuts closer Seth Harvey.

The Wingnuts (11-6) wasted little time grabbing an early advantage, stringing together a walk and five straight hits off Fargo-Moorhead starter Jose Almarante. RBI singles from Brent Clevlen and Brennen Salgado made it 2-0 Wichita, but two outs at the plate squandered a chance for more.

After Ryan Kussmaul set down the first six hitters he faced, Fargo-Moorhead threatened for the first time in the third, but a diving stop and throw from TJ Mittelstaedt stranded a pair of RedHawks.

Wichita quickly made the RedHawks pay for the missed opportunity, as Zac Fisher followed a Richard Prigatano double by crushing a two-run homer to extend the lead to 4-0.

Fargo-Moorhead finally got to Kussmaul in the sixth, when a walk and a single set up KD Kang's three-run homer. Later in the inning, Ryan Pineda snuck a single into right to tie the game at 4-4.

Salgado grounded a two-run single in the seventh to put the Wingnuts back in front at 6-4, but the bullpen couldn't hold the lead.

Casey Weathers (2-0) notched the win for Fargo-Moorhead with two scoreless innings in relief, while Jared Wilson (0-1) picked up the loss.

The Wingnuts will next continue their road swing with a trip to Kansas City for a three-game set with the T-Bones. Eddie Medina (2-0, 2.25) is slated to get the start in game one for Wichita. All the action will be broadcast on 1410 AM/93.9 FM, and at americanassociationbaseball.tv.
