Wichita Wingnuts News Release
Wichita Wingnuts (11-5) at Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks (11-5) RHP Ryan Kussmaul (1-2, 3.50) vs. RHP Jose Almarante (2-1, 4.15) 1:00 p.m. - Newman Outdoor Field (Fargo, N.D.)
WICHITA WINS SIXTH STRAIGHT
The Wichita Wingnuts extended their winning streak to six in a row on Saturday night, knocking off the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks 11-6 at Newman Outdoor Field. Neither team got much of anything going in the first three innings, but Wichita's offense woke up in the fourth. After drawing a pair of walks to start the frame, the Wingnuts got their first hit of the evening from TJ Mittelstaedt, a three-run homer to right to make it 3-0. Matt Chavez followed with a solo shot, giving the Wingnuts back-to-back homers for the first time in 2017 before Martin Medina capped the six-run frame with a two-run homer. Fargo pulled to within two with a four-run sixth that bounced Alex Boshers from the contest, but Wichita responded with three in the eighth on an error, a passed ball and a Christian Stringer RBI double. The home team got a run closer in the bottom half, before the Wingnuts pushed into double-digits for the third straight night with a pair in the ninth. Richard Prigatano and Leo Vargas picked up the RBIs in the frame, giving the Wingnuts nine runs in the ninth inning over the first two games of the weekend series.
POWER SURGE
The Wingnuts launched three home runs in the fourth inning last night, the first time they have hit three long balls in a single game this season. TJ Mittelstaedt and Matt Chavez went back-to-back to get Wichita out to a 4-0 lead as a part of the six-run frame, on what were the first two hits of the evening for the visitors. It was also the first time that Wichita has hit back-to-back home runs this year. The Wingnuts had two home runs through their first 11 games but have found their power stroke over the last five contests, launching a total of eight homers. Chavez leads the way for Wichita, having hit three round-trippers so far in 2017.
GOING FOR THE SWEEP
The Wingnuts will take aim at their second straight series sweep this afternoon as they wrap-up their weekend set in Fargo. Wichita comes in riding a six-game winning streak, their longest streak since a nine-game run last year from June 30 to July 9. A sweep of Fargo would be the first road series sweep for Wichita in 2017, and their first since July 1-2 last year in a rain-shortened series against Joplin.
