St. Paul Saints News Release
CLEBURNE, TX - Tied at two in the bottom of the sixth against the Salina Stockade, who had lost 14 straight, the St. Paul Saints had to feel a little uneasy. That was until Tony Thomas saved the day with a solo homer in the bottom of the sixth which propelled the Saints to a 3-2 victory in game two of the doubleheader and a three-game sweep at The Depot at Cleburne Station.
In the top of the sixth the Saints led 2-1 until Jordan Calliouet hit a solo homer to left, his fourth of the season, off of Saints reliever Vinny Nittoli. Nittoli had retired the first eight batters he faced until the home run.
Thomas led off the bottom of the sixth and on a 1-1 pitched crushed a solo homer to left-center field, his fourth of the season, to give the Saints a one run lead.
That was more than enough for Caleb Thielbar, who retired the one batter he faced in the top of the sixth. Thielbar retired the side in order, the final two on strikeouts, to record the win.
The Saints jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first when Danny Oh led off with a walk and stole second. With two outs Brady Shoemaker came through with an RBI single.
The Stockade tied it at one in the fourth off of spot starter Corey Williams. Through 3.0 innings Williams allowed just a single, but in the fourth Eric Ferguson led off with a single. Jesse Baker then hit a grounder in the hole between short and third that shortstop Tanner Vavra fielded, but his throw to second was too late. With one out Daniel Aldrich tied it at one with a single to right, ending Williams' day. He went 3.1 innings allowing one run on three hits while striking out four.
In the fifth the Saints regained the lead when Vavra led off with a walk. He advanced to second on a wild pitch. Back-to-back walks to Oh and Breland Almadova loaded the bases and Nate Hason made it 2-1 with a sacrifice fly.
The Saints begin a three game series at AirHogs Stadium against the Texas AirHogs on Monday night at 7:05 p.m. The Saints send RHP Ryan Zimmerman (1-0, 0.00) to the mound against AirHogs RHP Tyler Bremer (1-0, 1.04). The game can be heard on Club 1220 KLBB.
