Goldeyes' Bid for Sweep Comes up Shy
August 4, 2010 - Northern League (NL)
Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
Although a rainy afternoon put a kibosh on batting practice, both teams looked plenty prepared. But, the Goldeyes ran out of gas when it mattered most and fell short of sweeping the three-game series with the Gary SouthShore RailCats by dropping a 6-4 decision Wednesday night.
The Goldeyes got off to a hot start when Aharon Eggleston took the second pitch of the game high off the wall for a triple. Three batters later Kevin West brought him home on a sac fly to right field. The quick start had the Goldeyes leading 1-0 after one half inning.
After falling behind early, the RailCats wouldn't roll over. Mike Massaro tied the game in the bottom half of the inning when he turned on an Ace Walker pitch and drove it right out of U.S. Steel Yard.
The 'Cats offense kept coming in the fourth when Mike Rhode drove in Cristian Guerrero with a single. Rhode would eventually come around to score on Mike Valadez double.
The fifth inning brought more of the same for Gary as they tacked on two more runs when a Guerrero double brought Mike Massaro and Jay Pecci around to score.
The Goldeyes made things interesting in the top of the ninth when Dee Brown sent a double down the line that scored Luis Alen and Vince Harrison. Harrison was hot on Alen's heels and was called safe on a play at the plate that got the entire Gary bench up in arms.
After a brief arguement, Brett Wallace stepped up and doubled home Dee Brown which cut the lead to two. They made it exciting, but the Goldeyes rally would fall short when Andy Shipman came into the game and picked up the save by getting Wes Long to fly out to left field
Although it wasn't his best outing of the season, starter Ace Walker still gave the team six innings, allowing five runs on nine hits while striking out two.
On the opposing side of the hill, RailCats starter Willie Glenn went eight and a third innings, allowing three runs on nine hits, while striking out seven.
The loss ends the Goldeyes three game winning streak, but still leaves them with an impressive 7-3 record on this 10-game road trip.
The Fish will return home Friday night to kick off a 10-game home stand with a three-game series against the league-leading Kansas City T-Bones.
