Trenton Thunder News Release
HARTFORD, CT - The Hartford Yard Goats jumped out to an early lead and never looked back in a 9-3 win over the Thunder on Thursday night at Dunkin Donuts Park.
With the win, the Yard Goats (34-24) earned a series victory over the Thunder (33-22) and hold the main head-to-head tiebreaker between the two teams with ten games remaining on the schedule in the first half of the season.
The Yard Goats took advantage of an error in the second inning to score five times off Albert Abreu. With one out in the inning, Chris Rabago lined a double down the left field line to plate the first run of the game. Manny Melendez then plated another with a groundout for the second out of the inning; setting up a key at-bat with Tyler Nevin. Nevin worked a walk against Abreu and Colten Welker followed with a three-run homer to left field to take a commanding 5-0 advantage for Hartford.
Abreu suffered his fifth loss of the season and went just 3.0 innings in his shortest start of the campaign. While Abreu allowed only one earned run, a solo homer to Alan Trejo in the third inning, he needed 68 pitches to work through his outing on Thursday night.
The Hartford lead expanded to 8-0 with single runs in the fifth and sixth inning off Will Carter; who allowed two runs in an outing for just the second time this season.
Hartford lefty Jack Wynkoop kept the Thunder off-balance throughout the first six innings of the game, allowing only three hits, on 68 pitches. The Thunder broke through against Wynkoop with a lead-off single from Zack Zehner in the seventh and a two-run homer from Mandy Alvarez over the visiting bullpen. Kyle Holder followed Alvarez with a solo shot to make it 8-3, marking the third time this season that the Thunder have hit back-to-back home runs. All three back-to-back homer games this season have come on the road: May 6 at Richmond, May 27 at Binghamton and Thursday night at Dunkin Donuts Park.
The Yard Goats added their third homer of the night in the eighth when Tyler Nevin hit a solo shot to begin the frame against Daniel Alvarez.
Zack Zehner broke out of a recent funk at the plate to lead the Thunder offense with a 3-for-4 day at the plate. Brandon Wagner recorded his sixth double of the season in the second inning.
Your Thunder return to ARM & HAMMER Park on Friday night at 7:00pm to begin a four-game series with the Erie SeaWolves. The Thunder starter is to be announced, the SeaWolves will start RHP Casey Mize (5-0, 1.21). Pre-game coverage begins at 6:40pm on 920 AM The Jersey and online www.TrentonThunder.com/Broadcast.
