Asheville Tourists News Release

ASHEVILLE, NC-- Every now and then one player seems to have success against a certain team. The Savannah Sand Gnats outfielder, Vicente Lupo, appears to be that kind of player when he faces the Asheville Tourists. After recording a three-run triple in Thursday night's game, Lupo one-upped that at-bat with a Grand Slam on Friday night. That blast helped lead the visiting Sand Gnats past the Tourists 6-4.

Asheville hit three Home Runs of their own, but all three were solo shots. Lupo's Grand Slam broke a scoreless ballgame open in the top of the fourth. Tourists starting pitcher Carlos Polanco allowed consecutive singles with two outs before departing the game with an injury. A walk loaded the bases for Lupo who took a Grahamm Wiest offering over the left field wall.

The Tourists answered with a solo blast from Yonathan Daza but Wuilmer Beccera made it 5-1 with an RBI double in the fifth. Shane Hoelscher and Roberto Ramos hit back-to-back Home Runs in the sixth for Asheville. After Savannah plated an unearned run in the eighth, the Tourists put a rally together in the bottom of the ninth.

Ryan Stephens led off with a walk and two batters later Luis Jean singled into right. Omar Carrizales walked to load the bases. A wild pitch brought the Tourists within two runs, but a strikeout and a groundout ended the rally.

On three separate occasions the Tourists put a runner at third base with one out and on all three occasions they failed to score. Sand Gnats starter Josh Prevost took the win going just over seven innings. He was ejected in the eighth after intentionally hitting Ramos.

Next up for Asheville is a five-game road trip to Charlestion, SC. Saturday's game will begin at 6:05pm.
