Gladiators Playoff March Update
March 19, 2007 - ECHL (ECHL)
Atlanta Gladiators News Release
2007 Playoff March Notes
The Gladiators have 8 regular season games remaining.
Gwinnett moved into first place in the Division with three straight wins over the weekend including a shootout win over the Florida Everblades on Sunday afternoon.
The top five teams in the ECHL's South Division qualify for the Kelly Cup playoffs with the two teams ranked 4 & 5 playing a three game series to determine the #4 seed that will face the #1 seed in the best-of-5 division semifinals. Seed #2 and #3 will also face each other in the division semi-finals.
Gwinnett plays at Texas on Friday and Saturday night.
The Gladiators play 4 of their remaining regular season games on the road.
Gwinnett plays 6 of its remaining 8 games against teams currently in a playoff position.
The Pensacola Ice Pilots have been officially eliminated from playoff contention.
The Columbia Inferno are six points away from being officially eliminated from playoff contention. If the inferno won all of their remaining games, they could finish with 77 points, placing them no higher than fourth place. They would also need Charlotte, South Carolina and Augusta to win no more than two of their remaining game for them to qualify.
Tied with 71 points in the final playoff position, the Charlotte Checkers have the inside track for the 5th spot over the Augusta Lynx. Charlotte has played two fewer games than the Lynx. Charlotte can qualify for the playoffs by winning out their remaining games.
Currently, 90 points will guarantee a playoff position as the Augusta Lynx, who are tied for 5th place, can only amass 89 points on the season.
Gwinnett needs a combination of 7 points to clinch a playoff berth - 7 points gained or lost by either South Carolina, Charlotte or Augusta.
With no help, the Gladiators could clinch a playoff berth on Thursday, March 29th if they win their next three games (3/23, 3/24 & 3/29).
Qualifying for the Kelly Cup Playoffs in each of their first three seasons in Gwinnett, the Gladiators clinched a playoff berth during the 2003-04 season on March 31, 2004; clinched during the 2004-05 season on March 26, 2005; and wrapped up a playoff berth last year during the 2005-06 season on February 28, 2006.
