Charlotte Checkers News Release

CHARLOTTE, NC –The Charlotte Checkers saw one of the ECHL's ironies play out in front of their eyes tonight at Cricket Arena. Last night, the Checkers outshot Columbia 42-21 and lost. Tonight, Charlotte was outshot 20-50 but defeated the Gladiators 2-1 with help from goaltender, Alex Westlund.

Gwinnett came out fierce in the first by scoring 1:19 into the period. Credit the goal to left wing Mike Vigilante. On a power play, Checkers Dusty Jamieson contributed to make the score 1-1. Jamieson, the ECHL player of the week, leads Charlotte with 21 goals on the season. Just 48 seconds later, Mike Wirll took a pass from Ryan Lang to edge Gwinnett 2-1 after the first.

It was a scoreless second and third period. Westlund, who is among the top four leading goaltenders in saves, broke a league record of 26 saves in the second period. The Las Vegas Wranglers previously held the most number of saves in the second period with 25.

"He [Westlund] gave us a chance to win tonight," stated Charlotte Checkers Head Coach Derek Wilkinson. "The more shots he gets, the better he is. That's when he's on top of his game."

The Checkers continue their 14 day stretch of games Friday, February 18 when they face the Mississippi Sea Wolves at Cricket Arena. This is the first of a two game weekend series. Join the Checkers Friday for Elvis Night and LACC/La Noticia "Soccer on Ice" night and Saturday night for LastMinuteGolfer T-shirt Night and Dog Races on Ice.
