Atlanta Gladiators News Release

The Gladiators looked to pick up two more points in the American Conference standings with a visit to Charlotte, North Carolina on Thursday night. Gwinnett seemed to be in good shape going into the final minutes of the third period, but the Checkers' David Marshall scored twice in just under 6 minutes to force overtime, where Andrew Carroll scored the game deciding goal to sink the Gladiators 5-4.

The Checkers got on the scoreboard first after an offensive zone faceoff win. Daniel Tkaczuk won the draw back to David Urquhart at the top of the slot along the blue line. Urquhart fired a shot off the right goal post, and Matt Stefanishion found the rebound and deposited a shot into a basically empty net behind goaltender Danny Taylor.

The Gladiators struck back with just over three minutes remaining in the first period. Matt Francis picked up a puck along the right boards with Tim Miller and Michael Forney crashing the net. Francis fired a shot through traffic that hit a skate blade and landed right on the tape of Forney's stick. With netminder Ryan Munce down on the ice, Forney slid a shot inside the right post to tie the game at 1-1.

The Checkers regained their lead at the 5:37 mark of the second period. Matt Stefanision received a pass from Steve Ward at the top of the slot, and blasted a shot towards Danny Tayor. David Marshall got his stick free at the right post and tipped the shot past Taylor. The power play goal gave the Checkers a 2-1 lead.

The Gladiators scored late in the period once again, this time Tim Miller collected the marker for the Gladiators. Pat Galivan and Phil Youngclaus teamed up to clear the puck out of the Gwinnett zone, and Miller raced to the loose puck. Miller zipped over the blue line and blasted a slap shot past Munce just inside the right post. The goal tied the game at two.

Gwinnett grabber their first lead of the game just 45 seconds later at the 18:49 mark. Youngclause ripped a slap shot from the right point, and Pat Galivan tipped the rebound free from Munce. Scott Mifsud battled free on the doorstep and slid the rebound into the net to put the Gladiators up 3-2 heading into the second intermission.

Sam Roberts increased the Gladiators lead to 4-2 with an Applebees power play marker early in the third period. Roberts held a puck inside the left point and blasted a shot that went off a shin guard and into the net past Munce.

The Checkers were able to bring the score to 4-3 on a goal by David Marshall, his second goal of the net. Marshall snuck behind the Gladiators defense and slid a backhand shot past the blocker of Danny Taylor. The goal came at the 14:04 mark of the period.

Marshall completed his hat trick with just 22 seconds left in the third period to force overtime. Stefanishion slid a pass to Marshall, who just squeezed a shot past Danny Taylor to tie the game at four goals apiece.

With no scoring in Overtime, Andrew Carroll knocked home the deciding goal in the shootout to give the Checkers a 5-4 victory.

The Gladiators fell to 28-26-4-3 while Charlotte improved to 33-20-4-3.
