Caruana Returns From AHL Portland

The Gwinnett Gladiators announced today that forward Matt Caruana has been returned on loan from the Portland Pirates of the American Hockey League. The 24-year-old Orono, Ontario native signed his second professional tryout contract with the Pirates on February 4th and appeared in 16 games, scoring a goal and four assists while adding five penalty minutes.

In total, Caruana has scored three goals and six assists for nine points in 36 games with the Pirates this season. While with the Gladiators, he has produced nine goals and seven assists for 16 points in 20 outings.

Caruana made his professional debut with the Pirates, appearing in five games and registering one assist, at the end of the 2007-08 season, following his senior year at Niagara University, where he skated four collegiate seasons. In 146 games with the Purple Eagles, he notched 51 goals and 78 assists for 129 total points and 108 penalty minutes. Prior to skating at Niagara, the 6'0" 175-pound forward played three junior seasons with the Bowmanville Eagles of the Ontario Provincial Junior Hockey League from 2001-2004.

Caruana will be available for tonight's game, as the Gladiators open a three-game series on the road against South Division rival Charlotte Checkers at Time Warner Cable Arena in downtown Charlotte, North Carolina.

The Gladiators continue their 7th season in the ECHL on Thursday, March 11th @ Charlotte at 7:00 p.m. The Gladiators are the AA affiliate of the Atlanta Thrashers and Columbus Blue Jackets and play all home games at the 11,355-seat Arena at Gwinnett Center, located just off I-85 on Sugarloaf Parkway in Duluth.
