Atlanta Gladiators News Release
Sean Fields made 26 saves and Kris Goodjohn picked up two assists to help the Gladiators beat the Pee Dee Pride 4-1 on Saturday night at the Florence Civic Center. With the win, the 8th place Gladiators now lead the 9th place Pee Dee Pride by 9 points in the race for a playoff berth in the American Conference.
The Gladiators jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a shorthanded goal 3:29 into the first period. Pee Dee netminder Nick Boucher came out of his net into the slot to play a loose puck but couldn't get it past Randy Dagenais who whipped the puck into the empty net for the unassisted goal. Steve Hildenbrand tied the game up at 1-1 on the power play later in the third period. Hildenbrand slid into the slot untouched and cranked a snap shot over the shoulder of Gladiators netminder Sean Fields. Steve Cygan and Gregg Johnson added the assist on the power play goal at 14:35 of the first period.
Joe Bourne gave the Gladiators a 2-1 lead with 3:56 left in the second period. Adam Smyth didn't get a hold of a centering pass in the slot from Kris Goodjohn and the puck rolled right to a waiting Bourne in the left wing circle where the defenseman buried the puck in the back of the net. Mike Stathopoulos extended the Gladiators lead to 3-1 just 44 seconds later with his 11th goal of the season. The rookie striped a Pee Dee defenseman of the puck around the blue line and snapping a shot under the pad of Boucher for the unassisted goal.
The Gladiators extended their lead to 4-1 just 19 seconds into the third period as Jeff Campbell posted his 26th goal of the season. Chris Durno missed on a centering pass from Goodjohn in the slot where a waiting Campbell capitalized on the loose puck.
Fields finished the game with 26 saves to help the Gladiators improve to 30-18-8 on the year and 68 points. The Gladiators finish out the weekend on Sunday as they host the South Carolina Stingrays at the Arena at Gwinnett Center at 4:05 p.m. It's Cam Brown Bobblehead night sponsored by Clayton Dental, Charter Communications and 104.7 The Fish.
