Charlotte Checkers News Release

CHARLOTTE, NC – The Charlotte Checkers knew from the start that their battle with Pensacola Ice Pilots tonight was going to be a tough one. Second in the American Conference behind Pensacola, Charlotte fielded just 13 skaters in the contest. After a duel between goalies, the Ice Pilots came out on top with a 2-1 shootout victory.

Both teams spent the first period probing for weaknesses with neither finding any. By the end of the first, the score was 0-0 with Pensacola outshooting the Checkers 8-7. Charlotte is 8-6-2 when tied after the first period, where as Pensacola is 10-1-3.

The teams continued to spar until the 4:27 mark of the second period when Pensacola left winger Jordan Krestanovich snuck one past Checkers goalie Alex Westlund to make the score 1-0 on the power play. The Checkers threw the kitchen sink at Pensacola goalie Frederic Cloutier for the remainder of the period, outshooting the Ice Pilots 14-9. The winningest goalie in the league, Cloutier thwarted every attack to keep the Checkers scoreless by the end of the second period. The Checkers were 0-6-0 at home when trailing after two periods, and Pensacola was 10-0-1 on the road when leading after two.

In the third period and with the odds stacked heavily against them, the Checkers Brian Escobedo took a pass from Bogdan Rudenko and put it past Coultier to tie the score 1-1 at 7:48. Escobedo's goal and a strong defense forced a scoreless overtime, and then a shootout featuring two goalies with a combined 49 saves on the season. In the end, the Ice Pilots would triumph 2-1.

The Charlotte Checkers next host the Trenton Titans on Tuesday, March 15th at 7 PM.
