Hershey Bears News Release

HERSHEY - The 2009 Calder Cup Champion HERSHEY BEARS announced today in conjunction with the American Hockey League that left wing Alexandre Giroux has been named the Reebok/AHL Player of the Week for the period ending January 17. The announcement was made today by BEARS President/GM Doug Yingst.

Giroux, who is second in the league in scoring behind linemate Keith Aucoin, began the week by recording a goal and an assist in a 4-3 loss at Norfolk this past Wednesday. He then paced the Bears' offense in a 10-4 romp at Albany on Jan. 15, notching his ninth career regular-season AHL hat trick and chipping in two assists. Giroux scored twice more and assisted on the game-winning goal in a 7-2 decision over Wilkes-Barre/Scranton on Jan. 16. He also reached a milestone Sunday, as he appeared in his 600th career AHL game and secured his seventh consecutive 20-goal season with a marker as Hershey defeated Syracuse, 4-3.

Giroux also was the AHL's player of the month for October this season. He notched 14 points in the month despite playing in just seven games.

In honor of his achievement, Giroux will be presented with an etched crystal award at an upcoming home game.

The BEARS are home this Friday and Saturday to play the defending Western Conference champion Manitoba Moose at Giant Center at 7:00 p.m. both nights. Tickets are on sale now at the Giant Center box office, or by calling (717) 534-3911.
