Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
Davenport, IA - Righthander Sawyer Gipson-Long dominated over 5.0 scoreless while the Cedar Rapids Kernels' lineup piled up a season-high 15 hits - seven for extra bases - in a 10-2 romp of the Quad Cities River Bandits on Saturday evening. Thanks to a Wisconsin loss in Beloit, the Kernels moved back into a tie for first place in the Midwest League's West Division.
Gipson-Long carved over 5.0 frames of three-hit ball, walking none while striking out nine batters. He worked at an 89% first-pitch strike rate and fired 47 of 60 pitches for strikes (78.3%).
The Kernels opened things up in the first as Anthony Prato (2-for-5, BB, 2 R, 2 RBI) led off with a single followed by Christian Encarnacion-Strand (2-for-6, 2 R) reaching on a fielder's choice with an error at second that allowed Prato to advance safely. Aaron Sabato (2-for-4, BB, 2 R, 2B, HR, 5 RBI) teed off on a three-run bomb to deep left, putting Cedar Rapids up three.
Jair Camargo (4-for-5, 2 R, 2B, 2 HR, 2 RBI) crushed a leadoff home run in the second, then Jeferson Morales (1-for-5, 3B, RBI) added an RBI triple in the third. Camargo blasted a 449-foot solo homer to open the fourth for his second leadoff bomb of the game. Will Holland (2-for-5, R, 2B) scored on an error later in frame to make it 7-0.
Sabato tagged a two-run double off the center field wall in the sixth, then the Kernels tacked on their final run in the ninth courtesy of a Prato RBI single.
Tyler Palm (2.0 IP, 2 H, 2 R, BB, 3 K) and Derek Molina (2.0 IP, H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K) closed things out for the Kernels on the hill.
The series finale is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. CT start on Sunday afternoon in Davenport.
