Quad Cities River Bandits News Release
Davenport, Iowa - The Quad Cities River Bandits gave up three home runs in the first four and runs in six of nine frames on Saturday night, as they fell to the Cedar Rapids Kernels 10-2 at Modern Woodmen Park.
After being held to five hits in their meeting on Friday, the Kernels smacked seven of their 15 total hits against the Bandits for extra bases, with three popping off the bat of the Jair Camargo who, after Aaron Sabato's three-run homer to in the top of the first, recorded two solo bombs off of Bandits' starter Tyson Guerrero to put Quad Cities in a 7-0 hole before the end of the fourth.
Sawyer Gipson-Long handled Quad Cities' bats with ease in his 5.0-inning start, scattering just three hits and striking out eight before handing it off to the bullpen.
In the top of the sixth, Sabato struck again for the Kernels, driving in his fourth and fifth RBIs of the game with a two-run double, making it a 9-0 Cedar Rapids' lead against Adrian Alcantara who worked 3.0-innings out of the bullpen for Brooks Conrad.
Quad Cities broke up the shutout in the bottom of the seventh thanks to Cam Williams who put an end to a 0-for-17 start to the season with a two-run homer to right field off of reliever Tyler Palm.
While Ruben Ramirez was able to keep the Kernels off the scoreboard for two of his 3.0 innings on the bump, the Bandits stranded the bases loaded in the ninth against Derek Molina to end the game and fall to .500 on the season.
Gipson-Long (1-0) capped off his gem with the win for the Kernels, while Guerrero (0-1) gave up career-highs with six hits, three homers, and five runs in the loss.
Quad Cities will look to split the six-game series in the Sunday matinee tomorrow, as they'll toss Anderson Paulino (0-1, 15.00) against Cedar Rapids' Aaron Rozek (1-0, 3.60). First pitch is scheduled for 1:00pm at Modern Woodmen Park.
