GENEVA, Ill. - Rob Gilliam pitched six innings of two-run ball for his sixth quality start in eight outings, and the Kane County Cougars cruised to a 7-2 victory Friday night over the Quad Cities River Bandits in front of 8,843 at Elfstrom Stadium. Gilliam notched the win, Connor Hoehn and Jose Guzman tossed perfect relief. The Cougars got 13 hits, including four from Conner Crumbliss, to return to one game over .500 and even the four-game series. They are three games out of first place at the midway point of the first half.

The Cougars used two big innings to support Gilliam (3-1). They sent eight to the plate in the third against Joe Kelly (2-3) and scored four, getting two-run singles from Anthony Aliotti and Nino Leyja. Then they sent eight to the plate in the fifth against Dan Calhoun and scored three, getting a three-run homer from Leonardo Gil.

Meanwhile Gilliam scattered six hits, walked two and fanned five in the win. He improved the Cougars to 10-4 this season when they receive a quality start and posted his fourth in a row. Hoehn logged the seventh and eighth, and Guzman handled the ninth, as that trio retired the final 12 River Bandits it faced.

The Cougars (18-17) and Bandits (21-14) play Game 3 of the series Saturday night at 5 CT. Ian Krol (1-1, 2.81) will oppose Scott Schneider (2-1, 3.03). The game will be broadcast on WBIG 1280-AM and online at www.kccougars.com, with pregame coverage starting at 4:45 p.m.
