Dayton Dragons News Release
Midland, Mich.-Christian Lara's two-run double with two outs in the bottom of the 14th inning lifted the Great Lakes Loons to a 4-3 victory over the Dayton Dragons on Saturday night. The game lasted four hours and 15 minutes.
The Dragons broke a 2-2 tie in the top of the 14th on Mark Fleury's RBI single to take a 3-2 lead. Great Lakes, which had not scored since the second inning, answered with two runs in the bottom of the 14th for the win.
The Loons began their winning rally when pinch hitter Austin Yount reached on an error by shortstop Didi Gregorius. Dragons reliever Blair Carson, who had not allowed a run in 12 innings this season entering the game, retired the next two batters with Yount holding at first base. But Rafael Ynoa doubled down the left field line to move Yount to third. Lara followed by hitting a 3-2 pitch toward the gap in right-center field, just beyond the reach of diving Dragons right fielder Sean Conner, as the winning runs scored.
In the top of the 14th, Gregorius walked with one out, went to second on a single by Henry Rodriguez, and scored on Fleury's single to left to break the 2-2 tie.
Great Lakes scored twice in the second inning to take the early lead. Dayton tied the game in the sixth with a pair of runs. Fleury walked to start the inning and with one out, Andrew Means singled. Conner, just called up from extended spring training, tripled to center field to drive in Fleury and Means to make it 2-2.
Dragons starting pitcher Jacob Johnson enjoyed his best start of the year but was not involved in the decision. He worked six innings for the first time this season, allowing five hits and two runs with one walk and a season-high six strikeouts.
The Dragons play at Great Lakes Sunday at 3:05 p.m. in the finale of the four-game series. Pedro Villarreal (1-2, 3.53) will start for Dayton against Elisaul Pimentel (2-2, 3.52). The next home game is Tuesday, May 18 against the Lansing Lugnuts.
