Stockton Ports News Release
STOCKTON, Calif. - The Stockton Ports still have yet to beat the San Jose Giants in 2016. San Jose sustained a steady attack all night at Banner Island Ballpark and beat the Ports by a final of 8-1 in a second straight lopsided affair between the two ballclubs.
San Jose scored in the first minute of the game as Ronnie Jebavy led off the contest with a double to left and scored on an ensuing single by Steven Duggar. The Giants added another run later in the frame on an RBI single by Jose Vizcaino, Jr. to make it a 2-0 game.
Stockton's lone run of the game came in the third. Jose Brizuela singled with one out and went to second as the ball was bobbled by left fielder Christian Paulino. Brizuela would score on a two-out single by John Nogowski to cut the Ports deficit to 2-1.
Giants starter Sam Coonrod (3-1) allowed just the one run and earned the win after six innings of work, allowing six hits while striking out four.
Ports starter Casey Meisner (0-6) pitched around hits allowed in the second and third innings and around a walk in a fourth. San Jose hit up Meisner for another run in the fifth as Duggar drew a leadoff walk and scored on an ensuing double by C.J. Hinojosa, one of three doubles for Hinojosa on the night. Meisner suffered the loss, going five innings and allowing three runs on eight hits while striking out three.
Kyle Finnegan took over for Stockton in the sixth and gave up a leadoff single to Junior Arias followed by a walk to Ty Ross. Paulino came up next and hit an RBI single to left to make it a 4-1 contest. Finnegan would avoid further damage by getting back-to-back strikeouts and getting Chris Shaw to fly out to left to end the inning. Finnegan allowed one run on two hits over two innings of work.
Carlos Navas took over in the eighth and allowed a two-run homer to Duggar, his second in as many games, to run the Giants lead to 6-1. Navas starter the ninth and gave up back-to-back one-out singles to Vizcaino and Brandon Bednar. After striking out Arias for the second out, Navas was lifted for Lou Trivino, who gave up back-to-back RBI singles to Ross and Paulino that made it an 8-1 game. Navas allowed four runs on three hits over an inning-and-two-thirds.
Dusten Knight and Rodolfo Martinez combined for three scoreless innings of relief to close out the game for San Jose.
The Ports and Giants close out their three-game series with a matinee on Thursday morning at Banner Island Ballpark. Zack Erwin (1-3, 4.09 ERA) makes the start for Stockton, opposed by San Jose southpaw D.J. Snelten (1-3, 3.63 ERA). First pitch is set for 11:10 a.m. PDT.
