San Jose Giants News Release

STOCKTON, CA - The San Jose Giants pounded out 15 hits for a third straight game in Stockton on their way to a 9-4 victory Thursday afternoon at Banner Island Ballpark. The win completed a three-game sweep for the Giants (23-15) of the Ports and improved San Jose's record against Stockton this season to 10-0.

Aramis Garcia (3-for-5, 2 RBI) and Ronnie Jebavy (3-for-5, 2 SB) had three hits apiece while Brandon Bednar (2-for-5, HR, 3 RBI) homered and drove in three runs to lead the Giants at the plate. San Jose scored three runs in three separate innings en route to the convincing win.

The Giants jumped out early with a three-run top of the first inning against Stockton starter Zack Erwin to take a 3-0 lead. Jebavy started the game with a single before stealing second. Following a walk to Steven Duggar, C.J Hinojosa reached on a fielding error committed by Ports shortstop Mikey White which loaded the bases. Chris Shaw was up next and he grounded into a 3-6-3 double play, however Jebavy scored with the first run of the contest. Jonah Arenado then blasted a double off the fence in left plating Duggar before Garcia singled to center bringing home another run for a 3-0 advantage.

D.J. Snelten started on the mound for San Jose and worked around a pair of one-out singles in the bottom of the first before a 1-2-3 second inning. Stockton then pushed across single runs in the third and fourth frames against Snelten to trim the Giants lead to 3-2. In the bottom of the third, Sandber Pimentel grounded a one-out double down the right field line before Melvin Mercedes delivered a two-out RBI single. An inning later, a single and a walk put two runners on with two outs before Argenis Raga came through with an RBI single. Pimentel then walked to load the bases, but Snelten came back to retire Jose Brizuela on a fly out to right ending the inning with the lead intact.

San Jose then scored three runs in the top of the fifth to extend their lead to 6-2. After the two batters of the inning were retired, Shaw was hit by a pitch. The Giants then knocked out four straight singles against Erwin to produce three runs. Arenado singled to put runners on first and second before Garcia grounded an RBI single up the middle. Johneshwy Fargas was up next and he blooped a single into shallow left center to score Arenado for a 5-2 cushion. Bednar then lined an RBI single into right to make it 6-2.

The Ports though responded with two runs of their own in the bottom of the fifth against Snelten cutting the lead in half. A one-out single from John Nogowski and a walk to Joe Bennie put runners on first and second for Stockton. Then with two down, White grounded a double down the left field line scoring both runners to bring the Ports to within 6-4. Snelten followed by setting down Seth Brown on a fly out to center to retire the side.

Pat Young (2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 SO) entered from the bullpen to begin the bottom of the sixth with San Jose ahead by two runs and promptly worked two scoreless innings. Young went 3 up and 3 down in the sixth before pitching out of trouble in the seventh. Mercedes and Nogowski produced consecutive singles to start the frame bringing the go-ahead run to the plate, but Young struck out Bennie, retired Alex Glenn on a pop out and struck out White to end the threat.

The Giants' third three-run inning then blew the game open. Fargas led off the top of the eighth with a single before Bednar stepped to the plate and launched a two-run home run to left. The homer, Bednar's second of the season, made the score 8-4. Consecutive singles from Cristian Paulino and Jebavy followed before a walk to Duggar loaded the bases. Hinojosa then lifted a sacrifice fly to left capping the scoring for the day.

Reyes Moronta (1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 SO) pitched a scoreless bottom of the eighth for San Jose before Jose Morel (1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO) worked the ninth to seal the victory.

Snelten (2-3) picked-up the win after tossing the first five innings with four runs (all earned) and eight hits allowed. He walked three and struck out five.

Erwin (1-4) surrendered six runs (three earned) on 10 hits over 4 2/3 innings to take the loss for the Ports.

Arenado (2-for-5, 2B, RBI), Fargas (2-for-4, RBI, SB) and Paulino (2-for-4, SB) also finished with multi-hit games for the Giants.
