Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release

Lake Elsinore, CA- The Rancho Cucamonga Quakes improved their road record to 15-4 after beating the Storm at Pete Lehr Field in Lake Elsinore on Wednesday night, 7-2.

Kyle Garlick ripped a pair of home runs and the Quakes now lead the South Division by two full games over High Desert.

Lake Elsinore took the lead in the first inning off of Quakes starter Andrew Sopko. Javier Guerra walked with one out, and went first-to-third on a Franchy Cordero single. Then, Franmil Reyes hit an RBI single into center field, scoring Guerra to make it 1-0.

Rancho came back in the very next frame and plated a pair of runs to take the lead. Matt Beaty led off the inning with a walk, and Julian Leon reached on an error after the right fielder Luis Tejada dropped a fly ball, putting runners at second and third with nobody out. Several batters later, Michael Ahmed doubled home Beaty and Leon to give the Quakes a 2-1 lead.

In the third, Garlick crushed his ninth home run of the season, a solo shot, to make it 3-1 Rancho Cucamonga.

The Quakes made it 4-1 in the fifth after an error, a single and a walk loaded the bases, knocking Storm starter Brett Kennedy out of the game. Taylor Cox came in and walked Ahmed with the bases juiced, bringing home Beaty.

After Lake Elsinore scored a run on a Luis Urias RBI single in the fifth, Rancho pulled away in the eighth inning. Jordan Tarsovich and Johan Mieses walked to start off the inning, and then Garlick blasted his second home run of the game, a three-run shot to make it 7-2 Rancho, and the Quakes won by that score.

Garlick, after an 0-for-5 night on Tuesday, was back in his usual form with a 3-for-5 night on Wednesday with a single, two home runs and four RBI. He now leads the team in batting average (.333) home runs (10) and RBIs (35). Ahmed also went 1-for-3 with 3 RBI.

Sopko (5-0) picked up his team-leading fifth win for Rancho after pitching six innings of two-run ball. He allowed six hits and struck out five. Luis De Paula followed Sopko by pitching his best game of the season out of the Quakes bullpen. He threw two scoreless innings and faced the minimum six hitters while striking out four. Jeff Malm pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning for the Quakes.

Kennedy (0-2) takes the loss after failing to make it through five innings. He lasted just 4.1 innings, and allowed four runs (two earned) on four hits. He walked four and struck out three, as Lake Elsinore committed three more errors on Wednesday night after five errors in the season opener on Tuesday. Taylor Cox pitched 2.2 scoreless innings out of the Storm bullpen, and Trevor Seidenberger allowed the three eighth inning runs.

The Quakes (28-12) are now in first place by two full games, thanks to High Desert's loss at home on Wednesday night. On Thursday, Rancho will send Grant Holmes (3-1) to the mound against Lake Elsinore's T.J. Weir (1-2), with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.

On Friday night, 1,500 fans will take home a Corey Seager Bobblehead, thanks to Allstar KIA. Dodgers' rehabbing left-hander Hyun-Jin Ryu is expected to start Friday's opener. Game time is 7:05pm and tickets are available at (909) 481-5000 or online at rcquakes.com.
