Marlette's Pain Is Mavericks Misery
May 19, 2016 - California League (CalL1)
Bakersfield Blaze News Release
Frustration built for Tyler Marlette and his patience was nearly lost. The catcher had been waiting two months for some new bats to arrive, but the hardware was nowhere in sight.
Until now...
Marlette's crack from a new bat was heard throughout Adelanto after crushed a 2-2 pitch over the left field wall for a grand slam during a seven-run outburst in the sixth inning and the Bakersfield Blaze (16-23) trampled the High Desert Mavericks (26-14), 10-4.
The Blaze onslaught came less than 24 hours after Bakersfield tagged the Mavs for 12 runs in a Game 1 victory and now they are looking for more. Bakersfield will send their ace, Andrew Moore to the mound in the series finale with the idea of a sweep on their collective minds.
The 10:35am start time in Game 2 was a little earlier than expected, but Eddie Campbell (W, 4-2) made sure he did his job until the offense woke up. Campbell had some early control problems that led to three runs in the first two innings for High Desert, but the left-hander settled down after that and his teammates soon followed.
Jay Baum (2-4, 2RBI, BB, R) led the sixth inning off with a single into left-center field. Kyle Petty (0-3, 2BB, R) followed with a walk before Chantz Mack (1-5, R) loaded the bases with a clean single into right field. Austin Wilson (0-2, 3BB, R) struck out before Marlette came to the plate with one out. Marlette hammered a David Ledbetter (L, 1-4) fastball to deep left and Bakersfield never looked back from there. Marlette delivered the final knockout punch with his second homer of the game in the ninth inning with Wilson at first base as he finished with a career-high six runs driven in. It was the first multi-homer performance for a Blaze batter this year and it tripled Marlette's RBI total (9) on the season.
Campbell turned in another strong performance by going six innings, giving up three runs, on three hits before turning things over to Aaron Brooks. Brooks earned his second save of the season by working three innings of relief in another one-sided affair.
The Mavericks offense was unable to put together another complete game after being staked to early 3-0 lead and a lot of that has to do with pitching from Bakersfield.
Scott Heineman (3-4, R) and Tripp Martin (2-4, 2B, R) were the only two batters to record hits for High Desert as the team was 0-7 with runners in scoring position.
Game 3 is set for Thursday night with first pitched scheduled for 6:35pm. David Gascon will have the call on TuneIn Radio and BakersfieldBlaze.com.
