Vancouver Giants News Release

Vancouver, B.C. - The Vancouver Giants improved to 2-0 on the pre-season with a 3-2 victory over the Victoria Royals at the Ladner Leisure Centre on Saturday afternoon. Vancouver got goals from Dakota Odgers, Brennan Menell and Carter Popoff in the win.

Odgers was able to solve Royals goalie Dylan Myskiw with a shot from a sharp angle after a scrambled draw in the first period, putting the Giants up 1-0. Dawson Holt got the lone assist. Late in the frame, the Royals tied the game at 1-1 with a wrap around goal by Zach Russell.

Tempers boiled over in the second period when Giants forward Taylor Crunk and Tyler Thompson of the Royals dropped the mitts with Crunk landing a couple of hard shots to end the scrap. Both players got a major and a game misconduct, and the Royals got an extra minor, sending the Giants to the power play. On the man advantage, Menell found the back of the net on a seeing eye shot from the point through traffic, giving the 2-1 lead to the Giants.

Popoff added a shorthanded goal of his own in the third period to extend the lead, but the Royals responded on the same power play as Logan Fisher made it 3-2. The Giants closed the door for the remainder of the period to clinch the 3-2 win.

Cody Porter and Payton Lee split the game in the crease for Vancouver. Both goaltenders stopped 15 of 16 shots that were thrown their way.

The Giants will return to action on Sunday when they visit Vancouver Island for a return meeting with the Royals. Face-off is set for 2:00pm.
