Brandon's Wheat Kings Beat The Pats
September 12, 2015 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Brandon, MB. - Thanks to significant contributions from three local products, the Brandon Wheat Kings kicked off their Western Hockey League pre-season schedule Friday night with a 6-2 victory over the visiting Regina Pats.
Connor Gutenberg scored twice, Tanner Kaspick had a goal and three points and Ty Lewis opened the scoring as the Wheat Kings opened up a weekend home and home series with the Pats.
Game two will be played Saturday night in Regina.
A 16-year old rookie prospect, Gutenberg scored 19 goals and 47 points for the AAA Midget Wheat Kings in 2014-15.
Kaspick is entering his second season with the Wheat Kings while Lewis is hoping to crack the Brandon lineup after playing five games with the WHL club last season.
Gutenberg was Brandon's fifth round selection in the 2014 WHL Bantam Draft. Lewis and Kaspick were chosen in the third and second rounds in 2013.
Matching Kaspick's three point totals Friday was linemate Caiden Daley in what turned out to be his WHL debut.
The 15-year old Daley was Brandon's first round selection (22nd overall) in last May's draft, after scoring 23 goals and 61 points in 32 games last season with the Winnipeg Bantam Warriors.
Another former first round pick - Braylon Shmyr - rounded out the scoring for the Wheat Kings, who led 1-0 and 3-1 at the period breaks.
Luc Smith and Chase Harrison replied for the Pats, who were outshot 35-25. Rookies Logan Thompson and Josh Dechaine combined to make 23 saves in the Brandon net.
Even though the Wheat Kings' roster on Friday was littered with youngsters, Brandon did dress ten veterans, including Russian blueliner Ivan Provorov. The seventh player taken in last June's National Hockey League draft returned to Brandon this week and will be leaving for Philadelphia's camp next week.
Brandon will close out its pre-season schedule with a home and home series next week with Moose Jaw.
The Wheat Kings will then bring the curtain up on their 2014-15 season in two weeks - September 25th - against the visiting Swift Current Broncos.
Tickets to that game are on sale at the Keystone Centre box office, by calling 726-3555 or online at keystonecentre.com. Those fans interested in Season Tickets are encouraged to contact the Wheat Kings' office at 726-3535.
Speaking of Season Tickets, Friday was "Pick-up Day" at the Keystone Centre and in addition to distributing well over one thousand tickets to fans throughout the day, the club sold close to seventy new ones.
