Oshawa Generals News Release
Tonight, the Oshawa Generals wrapped up a weekend of hockey tonight. The Generals had tough competition from the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds who only had one loss this season (until tonight). The Generals put up another two points this evening in a 4-2 win over the Soo. Tonight's win keeps Oshawa at the top of the Eastern Conference and marks Oshawa's seventh consecutive win on home ice.
From the beginning of the game, it was clear that things were going to be very evenly matched between the Generals and the Greyhounds, two teams that have had an impressive start to the 2014-15 season. Kenny Appleby had another amazing performance for the Generals tonight, who is now 9-0 this season. New York Rangers draftee, Brandon Halverson was also a force for the Greyounds, making several fantastic saves throughout the game. Michael Bunting of the Greyhounds took the first penalty of the night . Halverson made an attempt to play the puck, giving Cassels an open net, but the Greyounds defense prevented a goal. With 1:21 remaining in the first, the Greyhounds were called for too many men, but the Generals couldn't capitalize on the power play. The period was fast paced and showed off the skill of each team. The first period wrapped up with no score on the board and the Generals leading shots on goal 19-8.
The Generals started the second period on the power play. Shortly into the second, Wallace was called for tripping and the Greyhounds were on their first power play of the night, but a strong penalty kill from the Generals ensured that no scoring took place. Latour had a great chance on a breakaway but unfortunately couldn't put it past Halverson. After a fast paced, evenly matched game, the first goal of the night came from Anthony Cirelli, assisted by Michael Dal Colle and Josh Sterk. The Generals were on the board and the atmosphere in the GM Centre instantly changed, as the fans were anxious for a goal. Things started to heat up during the second as Josh Brown and Jean Dupuy exchanged words but were broken up by the refs and both took two minutes in the penalty box for roughing. The first Greyhounds goal tonight came from Gabe Guertler, assisted by Bryan Moore. The Generals redeemed themselves after a faceoff, winning the draw and allowing Hunter Smith the opportunity to score a goal assisted by Dal Colle and Lindberg. The second period came to a close with the Generals leading the Greyhounds 2-1 and again outshooting the team, this time 11-8.
The third period was another quick one and Halverson showed off his goaltending abilities, making some stellar saves. Dal Colle had a nice scoring opportunity but the post denied him the chance. The Greyhounds defense started to waver nearing the end of the third period and Smith was able to score another, assisted by Latour and Cassels, giving the Generals a 3-1 lead. With just over two minutes remaining in the third period, the Soo called a timeout and Halverson remained on the bench, Bryan Moore was called a short time later, putting the Generals on a power play. However, it would be Bunting who scored a shorthanded goal for the Greyhounds, narrowing the Generals lead to 3-2 with only minutes to go. Looking to try and tie things up, the Greyhounds pulled Halverson again, but the Generals scored their last goal of the game, an open net, game winner from Hunter Smith. Smith received first star tonight for his hat trick and solid performance through the whole game. Second star went to Michael Dal Colle and third star went to Brandon Halverson. The Generals had a perfect performance this weekend, securing six points in three games, and things are just starting to heat up.
