Sudbury Wolves News Release
The Sudbury Wolves' losing skid continued as the Wolves dropped an important 4-2 decision to the Niagara IceDogs on Saturday night in St. Catherines. The IceDogs were playing their third game in three nights while the Wolves were playing their second game in as many nights. Yet, the IceDogs struck early and took a 2-0 lead after the first period of play. Shots on goal were 15-11 for Niagara in the first period.
The Wolves had to kill almost four minutes in penalties to start the second period as Wolves' veteran Danny Desrochers was charged with two consecutive minor penalties. The Wolves killed off the penalties but the IceDogs managed to score a goal with less than three minutes to play as a harmless shot deflected into the Sudbury net off of Austin Clapham's stick. Shots on goal were 13-9 in favour of the IceDogs in the second period.
Matt Schmalz scored his fifth goal of the season early in the third period to make the score 3-1 and the Wolves continued to apply offensive pressure on the IceDogs in the third period. The Wolves made it 3-2 with less than a minute to play when veteran defenceman Jeff Corbett scored with the extra man on the ice for the Wolves. However, another untimely turnover resulted in an empty net goal and the IceDogs skated away with their second win of the season. Shots on goal finished 13-11 in favour of the IceDogs in the third period and 41-31 overall.
Troy Timpano was again solid in goal for the Wolves as the 16 year old netminder blocked 37 of the 40 shots that he faced. The Wolves power play was 0 for 2 while the Wolves' penalty-killing was a perfect 4 for 4.
Pavel Jenys and Kyle Capobianco had assists while Danny Desrochers finished the game with two helpers.
The Wolves lost Brody Silk to injury early in the third period as the veteran blocked a shot. Nathan Pancel and Jeff Corbett also suffered injuries blocking shots, but both players returned to finish the game. The Wolves continue to be without the services of Nick Baptiste. Baptiste will visit with team doctors this week with the hopes of returning to play sometime soon.
The Wolves will be looking to snap their 9-game losing streak on Wednesday night in Sault Ste. Marie when the Wolves take-on the #2 ranked team in the country. The Wolves return home on Friday, Oct. 24th to host the Peterborough Petes at 7:30. The Wolves host Connor McDavid and the Erie Otters on Saturday at 7:00 pm.
There are plenty of good seats available for fans to come out and watch some of the best junior hockey players in the world - Nick Ritchie of the Peterborough Petes and Connor McDavid of the Erie Otters.
