Montgomery Biscuits News Release

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Daulton Varsho's solo home run in the ninth inning broke a 5-5 tie and completed a five-run comeback for the Jackson Generals (27-20), who stunned the Biscuits (29-19), 6-5, on Saturday night at Riverwalk Stadium. The loss was the Biscuits' first home series defeat of 2019 as Montgomery's lead in the First Half North Division shrunk to 1.5 games.

Justin Donatella, who won Game 3 of the 2018 North Division Championship Series with six shutout innings at Riverwalk Stadium, started for the Generals, but didn't make it out of the first inning. The Biscuits hammered the righty for four runs in the first frame, thanks to a two-run double by Jesus Sanchez, an RBI-double by Tristan Gray, and an RBI-single by Robbie Tenerowicz to make it 4-0.

In the second, Sanchez was back at, grounding an RBI-single into left off Connor Grey to make it a 5-0 contest. Kenny Rosenberg was on the mound for the Biscuits and pitched well through the first three innings, keeping the Generals off the board.

Jackson began to chip away at the five-run deficit in the fourth with a Drew Ellis sac fly. An inning later, Varsho's RBI-single, Jamie Westbrook's sac fly, and Pavin Smith's RBI-single made it a one-run game at 5-4.

Ivan Pelaez then pitched a perfect sixth in relief of Rosenberg, and Curtis Taylor did the same in the seventh, as the Biscuits maintained their slim lead. In the eighth, with Jazz Chisolm on second, Ellis struck again, this time with a two-out floater of a single into center off Taylor that tied the game at five.

Phoenix Sanders (2-2) entered in the ninth, and after retiring the first two batters with ease, surrendered the solo homer to Varsho that sailed over the right field wall and completed the comeback victory for the Generals. Junior Garcia closed things out in the bottom of the ninth for his second save and handed the Biscuits their season-high third-consecutive loss.

The Biscuits will try to rebound on Sunday afternoon when Josh Fleming (4-2) takes on Bo Takahashi (3-2) at 2:05 PM CT.
