Mississippi Braves News Release
PEARL, MS - The Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (19-30) scored eight runs over the final five innings on Saturday night to erase a five-run deficit and beat the Mississippi Braves (21-26) in 10 innings, 8-7. The M-Braves allowed a season-high 14 hits and dropped their third straight and the series to Jacksonville.
Saturday's game had a festive feel at Trustmark Park with the M-Braves saluting our fallen heroes. Nine Gold Star Families were recognized during a pregame ceremony and presented a white rose from nine different M-Braves players.
The matchup featured the top pitching prospects for each respective organization. The M-Braves jumped all over Marlins top prospect Sixto Sanchez in the bottom of the first inning. Cristian Pache led off with a double and then scored on the next pitch - a triple by Drew Waters. The 20-year-old duo each had two hits in the game, their 17th multi-hit games each.
Carlos Martinez singled home Daniel Lockhart in the second inning to make it 3-0, and Alejandro Salazar brought in Waters with a two-out single in the third.
Ian Anderson surrendered just two infield singles through his first five innings of shutout baseball, facing only two over the minimum and striking out eight of his nine batters on the night. Brian Miller and Magneuris Sierra reached to begin the sixth inning and Miller scored on a sacrifice fly by Joe Dunand to make it 4-1.
Lockhart opened the bottom of the sixth inning with a walk. He stole second and scooted to third on a throwing error. Martinez put the Braves up 5-1 with an RBI ground out. Ray-Patrick Didder blasted a 406-foot home run to the berm in left-center, his third on the season to up the lead to 6-1.
Stone Garrett started the top of the seventh inning by rounding the bases on a single and throwing error to bring the Shrimp within 6-2. Anderson retired the next two batters before walking pinch-hitter Corey Bird, ending his outing after 105 pitches. Anderson finished with a season-high 6.2 innings pitched, giving up just two runs, one earned on five hits with two walks and nine strikeouts. In three career starts against Jacksonville, the Atlanta Braves top pitching prospect has allowed only one earned run in 16.2 innings with 30 strikeouts. Anderson is now second in the Southern League with 61 strikeouts in 10 starts.
Connor Johnstone recorded the final out of the top of the seventh inning to maintain the 6-2 advantage. The Jumbo Shrimp brought nine batters to the plate in the eighth inning, and six-straight reached on hits with one out against Johnstone. The big blow was a two-run home run by Dunand. J.C. Millan and Santiago Chavez's RBI singles tied the game at 6-6.
In extras, Jacksonville struck first in the top of the 10th inning on a single by Millan and then pushed their first lead of the night to 8-6 on a double by Chavez. Reliever Jordan Harrison (L, 0-2) surrendered two runs, one earned and struck out one.
Riley Unroe began the bottom of the 10th inning with a single and then Ryan Casteel brought in bonus runner Drew Waters on a single, trimming the deficit to 8-7 with nobody out. Reliever Jeff Kinley induced a pop out from Salazar, and then Lockhart bounced into a fielder's choice, pushing the tying run to third base with two outs. Martinez flew out to center to end the game, leaving the tying run 90 feet away.
The loss dropped the M-Braves to 5-2 in extra-inning games. Saturday's game featured 15 runs and 26 hits, the most combined in a game this season. Mississippi pitching saw 7+ runs score for only the fourth time in 2019.
The homestand concludes on Sunday night at Trustmark Park. The red-hot LHP Kyle Muller (2-1, 2.18) starts for the M-Braves against RHP Jordan Yamamoto (3-4, 3.42) for the Shrimp. First pitch is set for 6:05 pm with coverage beginning at 5:50 pm on 103.9 WYAB, TuneIn Radio, MiLB First Pitch app. and MiLB.TV (subscription required).
