Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release
PEARL, Miss. - The Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (19-30) defeated the Mississippi Braves (21-26) by a 8-7 score in 10 innings in the fourth game of the five-game series at Trustmark Park on Saturday night.
With the win, Jacksonville has won three straight to claim a series victory in Mississippi, the first road series win of the season and the first series victory since the Jumbo Shrimp won four out of five against Tennessee from April 25-29 at the Baseball Grounds.
Jacksonville right-handed relief pitcher Parker Bugg (1-1) earned the victory with two scoreless innings of relief. Mississippi left-handed relief pitcher Jordan Harrison (0-2) took the loss, allowing Jacksonville's two go-ahead runs in the top of the 10th. Despite allowing a run in the bottom of the 10th, Jacksonville left-handed relief pitcher Jeff Kinley earned his first save of the season by recording the game's final three outs.
Mississippi struck quickly in the bottom of the first. Drew Waters delivered an RBI triple to give the Braves a 1-0 lead, then he was quickly brought home on an RBI groundout to second by Riley Unroe to put Mississippi's lead at 2-0. The Braves added to the lead in the bottom of the second with an RBI single by Carlos Martinez to put the lead at 3-0. Alejandro Salazar added an RBI single in the bottom of the third to grow the lead to 4-0.
Jacksonville got its first run in the top of the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Joe Dunand that made it a 4-1 game. The Braves responded with two runs in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI groundout by Martinez, followed by a solo homer by Ray-Patrick Didder to grow the lead to 6-1. Jacksonville responded with Stone Garrett leading off the seventh with a triple and he scored on the play due to a throwing error by Unroe the shortstop to make it a 6-2 game.
Jacksonville's crooked number in the top of the eighth started with a two-run blast by Dunand over left-center field to cut Mississippi's lead to 6-4. The home run ended an 11-game homer drought for Jacksonville's offense, the longest such drought of the season for the Jumbo Shrimp. Jacksonville followed with an RBI single by J.C. Millan to make it a 6-5 game. The next hitter Santiago Chavez delivered his first RBI of the season, a game-tying single to even the score at 6-6.
Jacksonville broke the 6-6 tie in the top of the tenth, with an RBI single by Millan putting the Jumbo Shrimp in front 7-6. Chavez added an RBI double to grow Jacksonville's advantage to 8-6. Against Kinley, the Braves added a run with a Ryan Casteel RBI single to cut Jacksonville's lead to 8-7. Kinley retired the next two batters to strand the tying and winning runs on base to preserve Jacksonville's 8-7 win.
Both starting pitchers had no decisions in the game. Mississippi right-handed starting pitcher Ian Anderson (3-3) left the game in line for the win, working six and two-thirds innings where he allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits with two walks and nine strikeouts. Jacksonville right-handed starting pitcher Sixto Sanchez worked five innings where he allowed four runs (three earned) on seven hits with no walks and six strikeouts.
The Jumbo Shrimp and Braves will finish their series with the fifth and final game of the five-game set on Sunday night at 7:05 p.m. eastern. Right-handed pitcher Jordan Yamamoto (3-4, 3.42 ERA) will start for Jacksonville against Mississippi left-handed pitcher Kyle Muller (2-1, 2.18 ERA).
