Gators outmanned by Gladiators

Lafayette, LA The Louisiana IceGators winless streak was extended to five games as the Gwinnett Gladiators used three power play goals to defeat the IceGators 3-1 Wednesday night in the Cajundome. Gwinnett winning on back to back nights in the Frozen Swamp.

The Gators fell behind 2-1 after the first period, as the Gladiators tallied two power play goals. At 3:35 a Doug MacIver fight and instigation penalty paired with a John Evangelista slashing minor led to a 7 minute power play for the Gladiators. Only one goal was scored during the advantage as Mike Stathopoulos slammed home a rebound at 8:54 to give Gwinnett a 1-0 lead, his 3rd of the season. Louisiana tied the game at 13:56 as Wes Mason scored his team leading 12th goal of the season on a backhander from the right circle, Josh Barker and Troy Smith getting the assists. For Smith it was his first professional point. The Gladiators took back the lead on another power play goal. This time Adam Smyth scored his 2nd goal of the year on a wrist shot from the slot to make the score 2-1. For the period the Gladiators were 2-4 on the power play and out shot Louisiana 16-4.

After a scoreless 2nd period, Gwinnett would cement their lead in the 3rd period with yet another power play tally. At 8:47 Jim Jackson took the puck at the right point faked a shot and walked into the slot and fired a wrist shot past Marsters for his 3rd of the season. The Gators would get no closer as 3-1 would be the final score. The Gladiators went 3-7 on the power play, the IceGators 0-5. Gwinnett outshot Louisiana 32-17. With the loss, Louisiana falls to 10-8-3 (23 points) and remains in 4th place in the South Division.

The IceGators return home to the Frozen Swamp Friday, December 17 to take on the Texas Wildcatters at 7:05pm. This will be the fourth matchup between these division rivals. The IceGators lead the series 3-1 with the home team winning only once in the 4 contests. On December 3, Nathan Marsters gained his 1st pro shut out with a 3-0 victory in the Cajundome. This night will be Teddy Bear Toss night. As fans are encouraged to bring a new unwrapped stuffed animal to the game and throw it on the ice after the first Gators goal. All toys collected will be distributed locally. Fans will receive a $2.50 discount for donating a stuffed animal. Tickets for this and all IceGators home games are available now.
