TRAVERSE CITY, MI - The Traverse City Beach Bums were edged out again by the West Division leading Gateway Grizzlies on Friday night, falling 5-3 at Wuerfel Park in front of a crowd of 5,125.

Gateway scored first for the only time in the series, grabbing a 2-0 lead by plating single runs off of Beach Bums starter Dan Hawkins in the second and the third. The run in the second was unearned and Hawkins, making his first start, pitched 4.1 innings and allowed three runs (two earned) with four walks and four strikeouts.

The Beach Bums pulled within a run by plating an unearned run of their own in the bottom of the fourth. JT Thomas walked, Takeshi Yamamoto singled, and Thomas would score on an error to make it a 2-1 contest.

In the fifth inning after Hawkins departed, Dustin Roberts connected on a two-run homer to left off of reliever Phil Tognetti to extend the advantage to 4-1. Tognetti worked 1.2 innings in relief. The Grizzlies made it a 5-1 lead with a run in the top of the seventh off of Steve Shippey.

The Beach Bums were able to plate two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning and chase Gateway starter Toro Trevino, who notched his third win following a 6.1 inning effort. With one away Jeff Brown singled and Zack Kalter followed with a walk, his second of the game. Justin Holmes singled in one run with a base hit through the right side to score Brown. Jeff Vincent followed with an RBI single to score Kalter and make it a 5-3 game.

Brett Bostelman threw two innings and struck out three, keeping Traverse City within striking distance. He was chosen as the Defensive Player of the Game. Against Gateway closer Eric Ridener in the ninth, Brad Vericker singled as a pinch hitter with one out. Justin Holmes drew a two-out walk to put the tying runs on base but Ridener would close the door on his eighth save of the season.

Jeff Vincent was chosen as the Player of the Game. Vincent was the only member of the Beach Bums to record more than one hit as he finished 2-for-5 with a triple and an RBI. Justin Holmes was on twice with a walk and a single while Zack Kalter reached three times with a hit and two walks.
