River City Rascals News Release
Kalamazoo, MI--The Kalamazoo Kings have pounded their way to 30 hits in the first two games against the Rascals, taking the first two meetings by a combined 19-10 score, with the third meeting coming Friday night.
The Kalamazoo Kings didn't take long to add to the run advantage as they scored three first innings runs off starter Tim Dugan. To Dugan's defense, none of the runs were earned as there were two errors in the inning.
After the first Dugan would settle down, pitching to the minimum 12 batters from the second to fifth innings.
The Rascals couldn't take advantage of it though as they too were shut down by Kings starter Jeff Long.
Trailing 3-0 in the sixth the Rascals finally broke through. Shortstop Brad Hough got on with an error by the third baseman Joseph Ramos. Hough advanced to second on the play and then scored after Anthony Albano's two run single, which also scored Trey Hendricks.
The Rascals cut the lead to 3-2 going into the bottom of the sixth, but that's when the Kings took control of the game.
The Kings exploded for five runs, off five hits, two walks and two more Rascal errors as three Rascal pitchers were used in the sixth. Before the Rascals could blink it was 8-2 with only two of the runs being earned.
"We just can't get any consistency out there," Rascals manager Toby Rumfield said. "We go out and get back in the ball game one inning and give it right back the next. We need to be able to get outs and we failed that this series."
Jeff Landry hit his first homerun of the season for the Rascals in the seventh to bring it to 8-3.
That run was also answered back by three more King runs in the eighth off Mike Benacka. Benacka gave up three hits and two walks in the eighth to extend the Kings lead to 11-3.
Long (4-0) worked a perfect ninth and finished the game for his fourth win and first complete game of the season.
Dugan dropped to 1-1 on the season as he went 5.1 innings, giving up six runs, two earned, six hits, two walks and three strikeouts in his fifth start.
The Rascals dropped to 8-15 with the 11-3 loss. The win is Kalamazoo's third straight as they get over .500, improving to 12-11.
Next game for the Rascals is tomorrow, Saturday, June 16, at Traverse City, MI. Game time is 7:05 pm eastern and Damian Ursin will be on the mound for the Rascals.
