Midwest Sliders of Ypsilanti News Release
Slippery Rock, PA - The Slippery Rock Sliders professional baseball team, presented by Dollar Bank, have announced that right-handed pitcher Pete Parise had his contract purchased by the St. Louis Cardinals this morning. Parise becomes the first Frontier League player to have his contract purchased during the 2007 regular season. Parise is expected to report to the Cardinals' Appalachian League affiliate in Johnson City, Tennessee.
Parise made his professional debut with the Sliders last month, and appeared in six games for the Sliders, recording an 0-1 record with a 4.65 ERA and 13 strikeouts with only one walk in 10.1 innings. Parise did not allow a run in his last four outings, striking out ten batters while allowing only three hits and not issuing a walk over 6.2 innings.
Parise signed with the Sliders after finishing his career at the University of Pittsburgh this spring. Parise made 11 relief appearances for the Panthers this spring, compiling a 2-1 record with four saves and a 1.12 ERA. He was primarily an outfielder in college, having only pitched six innings prior to the 2007 season.
"The way Pete has been throwing for the past two weeks, we were expecting him to be signed right away," commented Sliders' field manager Greg Jelks. "With a fastball consistently in the low 90s plus his outstanding control, Pete has the opportunity for a tremendous career with the Cardinals."
The Sliders resigned RHP Steve Less to take Parise's roster spot. Less was with the Sliders during spring training camp, and posted a 4-4 record with a 1.99 ERA as a starting pitcher for Wittenberg College last spring.
The Slippery Rock Sliders are in the middle of a six-game road trip to Evansville and Southern Illinois. The Sliders return home on Tuesday, June 19 for a three game series against the defending Frontier League champion Evansville Otters.
