GARY, Ind. - The Sioux Falls Pheasants can only hope that Mike Rohde will cool off. The Gary SouthShore Railcats' first baseman hit the Pheasants hard on Monday night, leading the RailCats to an 8-3 win over Sioux Falls.
Rohde broke a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the seventh inning with a monster leadoff home run, giving the RailCats the lead for good. Rohde finished 4-for-4 with two RBI and a triple shy of the cycle. He has hit safely in seven consecutive at bats against the Pheasants over two games. His home run started four-run rally for the RailCats to take a 6-2 lead.
The Pheasants struck first with Hunter Jobes' solo home run in the third inning, his second of the season. But RailCats responded with a run in the third, and took a 2-1 lead on Rohde's two-run, two-out double in the fourth.
Brandon Sing tied the game with a leadoff home run in the seventh inning. The round-tripper was his 16th of the year, which leads the American Association and all of independent baseball. Mark Shorey pulled the Pheasants closer with a two-out single in the eighth inning, shaving the lead to 6-3. Reliever Will Krout then walked Sing to load the bases. But Francisco grounded out to second base to end the threat.
Mike Massaro's two-run double in the ninth brought in Gary SouthShore's final two runs. The Pheasants could only muster six hits against the RailCats. Starter Scott Shaw (6-3) held the Pheasants to four hits and two runs in seven innings.
Brandon Rapoza (2-7) suffered the loss, surrendering five runs and eight hits in 6 1/3 innings. The Pheasants' record fell to 22-28.
The four-game series concludes at 7:10 p.m. on Tuesday, July 5 in Gary. The game will be broadcast on Sioux Falls Sports Radio 1230-AM KWSN and www.kwsn.com.
