Shreveport-Bossier Captains News Release
AMARILLO, Tx.---Captains pitching struggled again at National Bank Sox Stadium on the Fourth of July as the Amarillo Sox opened up an 8-0 lead after two innings and beat Shreveport-Bossier 17-6. Sox second baseman Matthew Tucker picked up five hits, with two doubles, two triples, four runs and four RBIs in the win.
Captains pitchers have now allowed 52 runs in their last three games at Amarillo, with starting pitcher Osvaldo Rodriguez (3-2) being knocked around Monday night. Rodriguez allowed eight runs (five earned) in 1.1 innings, walking four and striking out two. Shreveport-Bossier pitchers walked 10 hitters on the night.
The Captains did hit two home runs in the contest but it wasn't enough as Amarillo batted around in the first and sent eight men to the plate in the second and fourth innings to take a 14-3 lead into the fifth.
In the first inning Fehlandt Lentini led off with a double and scored on Tucker's double. Cyle Hankerd knocked in Tucker with a ground out to short. With two outs, Rodriguez walked Van Pope and gave up a single to Tim Alberts. Pope scored on the throwing error by Captains shortstop Uriak Marquez. The ball rolled to the fence next to the Captains dugout and allowed Pope to cross the plate, though Alberts didn't advance to second on the throw.
Alberts would score on a fielding error by Captains third baseman Andres Rodriguez. Adam de le Garza came in on shortstop Jason White's RBI single to make it 5-0.
Tucker would lead off the second with the first of his two triples and then score on Hankerd's single. Hankerd came in on Albert's groundout to third and de la Garza would knock in the third run of the inning on a single to score Lee Cruz, who walked earlier in the frame.
The Captains got on the board in the third on an RBI double by Alex Cowart. In the fourth, they would add two more on Brian Peterson's fourth home run of the year.
Amarillo added five more in the fifth. Alberts led off the frame with a home run to left for his sixth dinger of the year. Captains reliever Lee Henry then walked the bases loaded and was lifted for Jameson Maj, who allowed a bases-clearing triple to Tucker. Tucker scored the 14th Amarillo run when first baseman Chris Nash singled. Nash came into the game to replace Hankerd who left after the third inning when he was hit on the shoulder by a Henry pitch.
In the eighth inning trailing 15-4, Andres Rodriguez launched a pitch from Sox reliever Austin Chambliss to deep center field which was ruled Rodriguez's sixth home run of the year despite the protestations of Amarillo center fielder Lentini and manager John Harris. Both felt that the ball had landed just below the yellow line demarcating a home run from a ball in play.
Amarillo designated hitter Alberts had another big night, with three hits, two runs and two RBIs. Every Sox starter had a hit and seven different players had runs batted in. The Captains allowed 10 or more runs for the eighth time this year. Cowart was the only Captain with more than one hit (2-for-4) as Shreveport-Bossier managed just seven hits against Sox pitchers.
Amarillo starter Travis Lawler (4-2) went five innings, giving up three runs on three hits. Relievers Chambliss and Gary Perinar pitched the final four innings allowing no earned runs but three runs. The Captains bullpen had trouble against the Sox for the second straight night, giving up nine runs in 6.2 innings of relief.
With the win Amarillo improves to 25-24, 8.5 games behind Grand Prairie in the American Association South Division. The Captains drop their second in a row and fall to 26-23, 7.5 off the pace in the division. The Captains throw Joel Kirsten (3-4, 6.13) to the hill against Amarillo's Matt Elliott (4-2, 6.25). First pitch is at 7:05 p.m.
