St. Paul Saints News Release
WINNIPEG, MB (July 4, 2011) - The St. Paul Saints spotted former Saints pitcher and American Association June Pitcher of the Month three early runs, but pounded him after that and went on to defeat the Winnipeg Goldeyes 12-8 on Monday evening at Shaw Park.
Goldeyes starter Luis Villarreal, who pitched for the Saints in 2005, '07 & '08, was 5-0 with a 1.82 ERA entering play on Monday. After the Saints hit the ball hard in the first, but came up empty they wasted little time in the second erasing a three run deficit. With the Goldeyes up 3-0 Brandon Tripp led off with a double. Alex Garabedian reached on an infield single to short and Jonathan Van Every loaded the bases with a single. Steve Mays, who was 0-18 on the season, got his first of the season dumping an RBI single into right to make it 3-1. Adam Frost walked to force in a run and make it 3-2. Ronnie Bourquin gave the Saints the lead with a two-run single making it 4-3. The Saints finished the scoring in the inning on Ole Sheldon's double play groundout.
The Saints knocked out Villarreal in the third when Richard Mercado led off with a walk, moved to second on a fly out by Tripp and scored on Garabedian's single giving the Saints a 6-3 lead. Villarreal went 2.1 innings allowing six runs on eight hits while walking two and striking out two and seeing his ERA jump to 3.38.
The Saints put up three more in the fifth courtesy of some miscues by the best fielding team in the league. With one out Tripp doubled and with two outs Van Every was intentionally walked. Mays then hit a fly ball to left center that Kody Kaiser and Ridge Carpenter went after and Kaiser reached out to try and catch it, but the ball fell out of his glove for a two-run, two base error giving the Saints an 8-3. The next hitter, Frost, hit a grounder off the glove of first baseman Justin Bass allowing Mays to score and giving the Saints a 9-3 lead.
Saints starter Donald Brandt settled down after a first inning in which he gave up three runs. He went 6.2 innings allowing four runs on seven hits while walking four and striking out two.
The Saints have taken a 2.0 game lead over the Goldeyes and try to win the series on Tuesday night at Shaw Park in the finale of the four game series at 7:05 p.m. The Saints send RHP Alberto Rolon (4-1, 3.10) against Goldeyes RHP Ace Walker (4-3, 3.98). The game can be heard live on Relevant Radio 1330.
