Gardner Trims Revolution

June 10, 2015 - Atlantic League (AtL)
Lancaster Stormers News Release

Joe Gardner suppressed the York Revolution for seven innings on Wednesday evening, pitching the Lancaster Barnstormers to a 3-0 victory and a split of a four-game series.

Gardner (1-1) yielded only one hit, a single by Andres Perez, with two outs in the fourth. The right-hander walked two, hit a batter and struck out six before handing the ball over to the bullpen in the eighth inning. He threw 100 pitches in his second start of the season.

Scott Gracey yielded a leadoff walk in the eighth but retired the side after that. For the ninth, the Barnstormers reverted to their history and went to Scott Patterson. The right-hander, who ranks third on Lancaster's all-time career saves list, allowed a leadoff double to Wilson Valdez but roared back to set down three straight, one on strikes, after that to nail down the game.

The Barnstormers got to Anthony Lerew (3-2) early. Yusuke Kajimoto drilled a double inside the third base bag to lead off the game and scored on a one-out single to center by Luke Hughes. In the third, Lance Zawadzki picked up a one-out walk and scored when Brian Cavazos-Galvez drove a double through the alley in left center as Lancaster went ahead, 2-0.

Lerew retired the final 10 batters he faced to keep York within reach.

However, in the eighth against Mike DeMark, Zawadzki picked up his second walk of the night. He got to second on a wild pitch and to third on a passed ball before riding home on a single scalded to left by Cavazos-Galvez.

Overall, the Barnstormers collected seven hits, two each by Cavazos-Galvez and Keith Castillo.

Lancaster will entertain Somerset on Thursday evening. Shunsuke Watanabe (2-2) will get the ball for the Barnstormers against Lucas Irvine (2-4). Both shut out their respective opponent in New Jersey in the series last weekend. Fans may tune into 1390-AM, WLAN; rumba1390.com or the I Heart Radio cellphone app, beginning at 6:45.

NOTES: The save was Patterson's 30th as a Barnstormer...The right-hander has not been scored upon in his last 8 2/3 innings...Lancaster won two games in a road series for the first time all year and finished its eight-game trip, 3-5...The two hits picked up by York was the fewest by an opponent in 2015...Hughes had five hits in three games on the trip, ranking behind only Kajimoto on the team for the entire road trip.
