Sugar Land Hands Bridgeport Fourth Consecutive Loss

June 10, 2015 - Atlantic League (AtL)
Bridgeport Bluefish News Release

(Sugar Land, TX - June 9, 2015) - The Bridgeport Bluefish (18-25) were beaten for the third consecutive time by the Sugar Land Skeeters (22-23), 7-6 at Constellation Field on Tuesday evening. The Skeeters seek the four-game series sweep tomorrow night in the Lone-Star State as the 'Fish close out the road trip.

Bluefish Starting Pitcher Reinaldo Lopez was tagged with a no-decision, tossing five innings, giving up five runs (four earned runs), on seven hits, walking two, and striking out two. Sugar Land Starting Pitcher Shane Loux picked up a no-decision as well, pitching five innings, allowing one run (zero earned runs), on seven hits, walking two, and striking out one.

Trailing 5-1 in the top half of the sixth inning, the 'Fish scored five runs and had their first lead of the night. With Cory Van Allen on in relief of Loux, Jobduan Morales and Andres Rodriguez began the frame with back to back walks. Van Allen retired the next two batters in succession, and looked like he may get out of the inning unscathed. Jake Luce reached on an error by shortstop Amadeo Zazueta, scoring Morales with the first run of the night for Bridgeport. Sean Burroughs then brought home Rodriguez with an RBI single. With Robbie Weinhardt now on in relief, Welington Dotel greeted him rudely with an RBI single of his own, plating Luce with the third run of the inning. John Alonso then capped the five run rally with a two-run double off Weinhardt, scoring Burroughs and Dotel, and the comeback was complete as the 'Fish erased the four-run deficit and took a 6-5 lead, with all five runs coming with two outs in the inning. The five-run inning tied the most runs scored by the 'Fish in a single inning, matching their five-run outburst they had in the third and the fifth innings in a 20-0 victory at Camden over the Riversharks on May 3rd.

The Skeeters would come right back in the bottom half of the seventh inning of this back and forth ballgame and regain the lead for good. With Sam Gervacio on in relief, Travis Scott picked up a game-tying RBI single with two outs, scoring Willy Taveras. The two-out hit parade continued as Kevin Russo drove home what would be the eventual game winning run with an RBI single, scoring Delwyn Young. Gervacio (2-3) suffered the loss out of the bullpen, pitching one inning, giving up two runs on four hits, striking out two. Derrick Loop (1-0) was credited with the victory for Sugar Land, tossing an inning and one-third of hitless and scoreless baseball, striking out one. John Lujan closed the game out with a perfect ninth inning, striking out two in the process, earning his third save. Burroughs, Dotel, and Rodriguez each had two hits for Bridgeport.

The Bluefish return to the Ballpark at Harbor Yard on Thursday, June 11th, when they host their cross-sound rival Long Island Ducks for a four-game series. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.

The Bridgeport Bluefish are members of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball and play their home games at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard. For further information, call 203-210-BLUE (2583) or visit BridgeportBluefish.com.
