Blue Crabs Lose a Slugfest to Drop Their Third Straight

(Central Islip, NY, June 9th 2015)---Southern Maryland banged out 14 hits, one off their season high, but only scored five runs to show for it, as the Long Island Ducks defeat the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs in an offensive centric game 10-5.

The big story of the ballgame is the counter punch by the Ducks through the first five innings offensively. Southern Maryland took the lead early in the top of the second on a Jake Opitz Homerun. In the top of the third, after a Zach Wilson double, Daryle Ward would step to the plate, and single to drive in Wilson. After Gustavo Molina singled, and a Jake Opitz walk to load the bases, Casey Stevenson was hit by the pitch to score Ward to make it 3-0.

Long Island provided a big time answer with three runs in the bottom of the frame to tie the game. Dan Lyons led off the inning with a solo homerun. After the Ducks loaded the bases, Jon Griffin doubled to score Sabatella, and Ford to tie the game at 3-3.

In the top of the fifth, with Daryle Ward at second Jake Opitz doubled to score Ward. Casey Stevenson then switched places with Opitz with an RBI double to make a 5-3 ballgame. Long Island in the bottom half of the inning scores five runs to take their first lead of the game. With Cody Puckett on base, Prentice Redmond homered to tie the game at 5-5. Reegie Corona came to the plate and doubled, followed by a Mike Blanke single to score Corona. Dan Lyons doubled to score Blanke, and Bryan Sabatella singled to score Lyons putting a five spot in the inning to take an 8-5 lead.

The Ducks tacked on two more runs in the sixth. Lew Ford doubled, followed by a single by Cody Puckett to put runners at the corners. Jon Griffin drove in his third RBI of the night with a sacrifice fly to score Ford. Two batters later Reegie Corona singled to score Puckett to make it a 10-5 game. The Blue Crabs were held scoreless the final three innings as the Blue Crabs left 14 runners on base.

LHP Wade Korpi started the ballgame and did not factor in the decision, pitching 2.1 innings, allowing three runs, on five hits, walking three, and striking out two. Meanwhile, offensively eight of the nine guys in their batting order had at least one hit, while the two teams combined for 29 hits.

Southern Maryland will look to salvage the series tomorrow, as the Ducks and the Blue Crabs play game four of the set tomorrow evening. RHP Brian Baker (2-3, 4.21) will start for Southern Maryland, while RHP Andrew Barbosa (2-0, 0.40) will take the hill for Long Island. The first pitch is set for 6:35 P.M.
