Lincoln Saltdogs News Release
LINCOLN, NE - Jarrett Gardner threw the first no-hitter in Lincoln Saltdogs history Thursday night, beating El Paso 4-0 at Haymarket Park. Gardner, who earlier this year set the all-time Lincoln record for career wins, picked up the third no-hitter in the history of the American Association, and the second league no-no this season.
Gardner retired the first 17 batters he faced, before giving up his only base runner, a two-out walk in the sixth to David Washington. Washington advanced to third on a wild pitch and a throwing error, but Gardner retired Kennard Bibbs on a groundout to end the frame. The righty faced just one batter over the minimum, striking out four Diablos batters and throwing 92 pitches on the night.
El Paso's best bid for a hit came in the ninth, when Hector Bernal led off with a bloop behind third base. Shortstop Albenis Machado ranged 30 feet to his right, making a diving catch to preserve the no-hitter. Gardner then retired the final two hitters on grounders to short, setting off a celebration near the pitching mound as the Saltdogs poured out of the dugout to mob their ace pitcher.
Offensively, Lincoln scored a run in the first on Phil Hawke's RBI single, and played two more in the sixth on RBI singles by Brandon Jones and Deacon Burns. Josh Burrus finished off the scoring with a solo home run in the eighth, his eighth of the year. Lincoln swept El Paso in the three-game series, the Saltdogs' first sweep this season.
Lincoln welcomes Sioux City to Haymarket Park for game one of a three-game series Friday night at 7:05. Brian Campbell will make the start for the Saltdogs.
