Shreveport-Bossier Captains News Release
Shreveport-Bossier scored six times in the third inning en route to a 7-4 win over the Cats on Thursday night at LaGrave Field.
The Cats jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first as they scored two unearned runs as Brian Fryer came home to score on the second error of the inning committed by Captains' shortstop Joe Urtuzuastegui. The second run scored on a sacrifice fly by Pat O'Sullivan.
The Captains would narrow the lead to 2-1 in the second inning on an RBI single by Jonathan Reynoso. In the third, Shreveport would put up a six-run rally to take the lead in the game.
Dwayne White led off the inning with a walk and Christopher Garcia singled. ONe out later, Selwyn Langaigne singled home a run to tie the game. Jose Torres followed with a single, BJ Wheeler with an RBI single and Luany Sanchez with a run-scoring hit for a 5-2 lead. Later in the frame, Reynoso delivered a two-run single to center for a 7-2 Captains advantage.
Fort Worth scored a run in the fourth inning on a home run by Kelley Gulledge, his sixth of the season. They cut the lead to 7-4 in the fifth inning on an RBI double by Michael Bell, but that would be as close as the Cats would get.
They brought the tying run to the plate in the eighth inning, but Shreveport-Bossier reliever Jakob Cunningham induced a pop up and struck out Fryer to end the inning and the Cats threat.
Logan Williamson (3-2) notched the win for the Captains as he allowed four runs on eight hits in six innings pitched. Joel Kirsten suffered his second straight loss as he permitted seven runs on 12 hits in seven innings of work. Despite the big third inning, Kirsten threw 139 pitches and retired the final seven batters he faced before leaving the game. Justin Dowdy earned his second save of the season with a 1-2-3 ninth inning.
Both O'Sullivan and Fryer extended their hitting streaks in the game. O'Sullivan's now stands at 21 and Fryer's at 16.
The Cats head to Grand Prairie for a three-game series beginning Friday. The team needs only one win in the series to capture the first-half crown. Game time Friday is at 7:05 p.m. with Ryan Riddle on the mound for Fort Worth.
