Canaries Snap Skid

St. Paul, MN - The Sioux Falls Canaries (16-23) snapped a five-game losing streak with a 4-3 win over the St. Paul Saints (20-18) on Thursday night at Midway Stadium. Joe Anthonsen went 2-for-3 including a seventh-inning single that drove in the go-ahead run.

St. Paul scored three runs in the bottom of the third inning to establish a 3-0 lead over the Canaries. Steve Butler opened the inning with a double to right field. Butler was sacrificed to third on a bunt by Andrew Schmiesing, and then scored on a double by Tony Mansolino. Todd Self followed with his fourth home run of the season. The two-run shot gave the Saints their three-run advantage.

The Canaries got on the scoreboard in the top of the fifth inning. Trevor Lawhorn doubled and advanced to third on a bunt single by Patrick Reilly. Ken Lup drove Lawhorn home with a single, cutting the deficit to two, 3-1.

The Birds tied the game in the fifth. Cory Harris reached on a single and got to third on a double by Lawhorn. With two in scoring position and two outs, Reilly delivered a clutch single to score both Harris and Lawhorn, evening the score at 3-3.

The Canaries took the lead in the top of the seventh inning. Jared Lemieux was hit by a pitch to get on base with one out. Lemieux advanced to second on a ground out by Tim Hutting, and scored on a single by Joe Anthonsen. Lemiux's run gave the Canaries a 4-3 lead over the Saints.

Patrick Lawler and Kris Regas combined to pitch the final three innings for the Canaries, protecting the 4-3 lead and delivering the win. Ryan Ford (1-5) gave up three runs on five hits and three walks in six innings while striking out a season-high seven in getting his 21st career win for the Canaries. Mike Bille (0-4) suffered the loss for the Saints. Kris Regas tied Fort Worth's Dustin Cameron for the league-lead in saves by recording the game's final five outs to get his 13th save of the season.
